Volume pots with power switches

On older amps with AC power switches mounted on the back of a volume control, is it generally of significant benefit, assuming that all other hum-reduction steps have been taken, to relocate the power switch to a dedicated toggle switch elsewhere on the chassis?

It can be a benefit IF it is one of the higher contributors to the overall amp hum. However, sometimes other hum producing portions of the amp swamp out the hum picked up by the close proximity of the volume pot and power switch. A simple test for your specific amp is to disconnect the AC switch wires, connect them together (Electrically insulated of course) and place them where they would be routed to your new proposed switch. Then power the amp up and determine if you got the significant improvement you expected.

I don't know, but IME the pot is usually worn out and in need of replacing anyway, and it can be hard to get a new one with a switch.

I have built a couple of Fender 5B3's of which the original design has the power switch with the volume pot. Separating the power switch from the volume control did reduce the hum.

I wonder if the hum reduction is due to the switch being removed from the control, or the AC wiring moving away from the control wires. You might get the same hum reduction by redrewssing the wires.
