  • anyone ever find this usefull?

Just wondering if anyone else finds using 2 different brands of tunes in a cathode biased amp useful for shaping the amp's tone. I have 3 different sets of EL34's, and i tried a tung sol RI which is a very very different sound. Like many say it does sound much more fenderish with the in your face hardness as opposed to the smooth soft sound of the typical 34. And the SED is just that, a smooth soft typical EL34 like the old seimens. I like certain things about the tung sol, but theres too much of it. using one of those and a SED gives a nice blend of the two. Who else has found this usefull?

depends on the output tranny in my opinion. You seem to have one that likes mismatched tubes. If you really want to have fun, try swapping out the O.T. and do the same thing.

Well, my amp, whether completely due to the OT or whether the circuit is part responsible, shows the difference between different tubes unlike any amp i've ever had. I have 3 different EL34's and the amp is a very different amp with any of the 3 in there. So knowing that i decided to mix and mach thinking i could relly fine tune it that way and sure enough i can really change the tone big time doing this and hone in on the exact sound i'm looking for. But what i 'm finding now is that it's dependant fully on how my ears feel at a given moment. So theres really no perfect scenario. One day i'll prefer a SED and a tung sol, next day i prefer a matched set of EH. But it really is cool to be able to match what a given room or my ears want to hear. It's truly like having several amps in one because this amp is so sensitive to tube type.
