there was a typo in the hyperlink to the schematic. its fixed now. its not too big of a file, so i'll just display it in this message:

"I happen to have an original 1955 Stratocaster! The neck and body have been replaced with top quality Warmoth parts, I upgraded the hardware and put in custom, hand wound pickups. It's fabulous. There's nothing like that vintage tone or owning an original." - Chuck H

well, it looks like the file served up okay. if you want a copy, save it now becuase i won't be able to leave the file on my webspace forever.

stokes, you may be right that those parts were just put there by parts hangers to begin with ... but i don't want to try to understand the parts hanger philosophy by becoming a parts hanger. i want to understand what's going on for precisely those reasons that Ray mentioned. besides, this is the "Theory and Design" section of the board, isn't it?

BTW Ray, what are you using for simulations? spice?

        Bob,

OK, got it - thanks again.

I use CircuitMaker (PSPICE engine) for the big simulations, and GlassWare programs (TubeCAD, PP Calculator, Audio Gadgets, etc.) for the smaller things. I had a copy of Electronics Workbench a long time ago, but never loaded or got familiar with it - I've heard it's quite easy to use.

"First, my electronics book is out on loan, so I thought I'd ask what purpose the grid/cathode capacitance serves."
Sorry, but you can see how a "parts hanger" like myself would mistake your question as wanting to know what purpose the grid/cathode capacitance serves. If your math tells you some new magic purpose it serves, please let us know.By the way,Ray,that schem can be forund on Schematic Heaven.

Thanks again for all of your help. I understood the qualitative explanation about parasitics the first time that it was made. Now we have a qualitative explanation thanks to Ray, as well as a schematic and several tips thanks to Chris. Thanks everybody! Its time to move on.
