  • Power tubes too close to PT?

    Hi Everyone

I am in the early stages of an amp build. I am using a Virbolux chassis repro and a vertical mount PT. I lucked out and the vertical PT mounting holes line up exactly with the stock mounting holes. This location puts my PT very close to my power tubes. I'm guessing a standard Vibrolux PT mounted on it's side would still be fairly close.

Do you think I should be concerned or is this distance nothing to worry about?

I have attached a couple of pictures. The pictures show 6L6's. My amp will be setup up to run either 6L6's or 6V6's. It will use a solid state rectifier so the rectifier tube hole will be covered. The main filter caps will be mounted inside.

    Thanks in advance everyone.

And your concern is...what? Looks fine to me.

Ok. I guess I'm over thinking it. I just wasn't sure if it was normal to have the PT so close. Was thinking of induced noise etc.., but I'm just going to go for it and hope for the best.

      Thanks for your input Enzo.

I can think of any number of recent Marshalls, like DSL and TSL100 types where the end power tube looks even closer than yours.

Ok. Thanks again for putting my mind at ease. Now to start building.

There was some discussion on another forum of destructing a 6V6 with a magnet, but that end result may not be directly applicable to an AC field. Perhaps someone could try a bit of possible destructive testing with say a tape head demagnetiser, or a choke.

That said, the PT would probably have to have no bell-ends, and the tube pretty much butted up to the middle of the winding with the correct orientation to maximise the stray field getting to the tube.

Hey, I had a problem like that, my power transformer would create ALL kinds of noise, but I'm not sure if it was since it was close to the power tubes (although I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case), but It would make a ton of weird nasty noisy noises. haha But I got a now PT and its silent as normal amps would be. You could also move the power tubes over and use the rectifier tube hole as one of the power tube holes. Then you could use the old power tube hole for something, although, it is an octal socket so there isn't much you could do. Just a thought. I did that on a Marshall 18W.
