    Ian, both types of magnet could generate equivalent flux to the voice coil if the magnetic circuit allowed. Mild steel pole pieces usually concentrated the magnets flux, but that then hits a limit when the pole piece steel starts to saturate. So I guess if the electromagnet was designed to operate the pole pieces near steel saturation with the available amp operating current then it may provide a better 'magnet' than a skimpily designed alnico magnet that may not have enough flux at its operating point to achieve the same pole piece flux level.

    As long as you can run a PE connection to the speaker, and perhaps test the coils insulation resistance as ok, then I'd think there would be other 'differences' that would end up dominating the speakers performance (spider and cone edge compliance; cone weight change over time; different model speaker).
