      Well, when I brought up my first 5 watt prototype amp, the first gain stage was a pair of 12ax7 in parallel, but each gain stage had fixed bias instead of cathode resistors, and each gain stage has a different value plate resistor which gives that amp it's unique complex tone. It's also using the fixed bias that dumps most of the hiss content generated by the pre-amp.
