Reduce gain of 12ax7 to 1

    The two triodes of the 12ax7 will not be in series. One will be the input stage and the other will drive the tone stack as a cathode follower after the 5879. I'm actually awaiting delivery of a 12dw7 to use in this position, since it would be more suited for the job.

      What I was saying is that for the same 9 pin socket a 12ax7 has more gain than a 5879 if implemented as described. The 5879 uses a whole 9 pin socket. The 12ax7 has two hi mu triodes for that same socket that can be coupled for greater gain. In other words, it's not accurate that a "12ax7" tube has an amplification factor of 100. A 12ax7 tube has TWO triodes with an amplification factor of 100.
