update: I've made an important discovery; I discovered that I don't like cascode stages in any configuration, hybrid/grid-leak bias, or otherwise at the input of this amp at all. Although, as far as sound quality and integration into the existing amp, I much preferred the lower tube without a cathode bypass cap. This was a good exorcise though, and perhaps a cascode as a later gain stage would appeal more to my taste.
