I am the king of wiring up plugs with the shell not put on first. I used to work at a TV station. Once I had to wire up a military spec 32 conductor HF antenna cable connector that was to live atop a transmitter tower for live video transmissions. I did a very nice job soldering up those 32 wires to that big connector. Until realized the shell was still on the bench! I had to snip, re-prepare, and re-connect it, much to the chagrin of my boss. And no, it never comes out as nice the second time for some reason.
I drop my head in shame every time I do this with a 1/4" or XLR connector to this day, it just seems to be a blind spot for me.
