So today I finished a build and was ready to test it, when I took a brand new pair of 6L6STR TungSol's and tried installing them on the amp. Never tried these, so was pretty excited with the elegant tiny bottle.
I was distracted and not really paying attention to such a trivial thing that's repeated 200 times a day at a shop: squeezing in a brand new pair of tubes into the octal sockets.
Well, what do you know.
As I pushed the tube in a loud pop surprised me, same noise as a light bulb exploding on the floor. I look and see my finger IN the tube....the thing blew up in my hand, cold, no significant pressure applied.
I notice a perfectly cut circle has been opened at the top of the tube. I look at the other tube from the pair and it seems like that's where they sealed it, as if they fused the glass at the top. My finger is ok, because the circle is so perfectly cut, it's not even too sharp....but I could have really hurt myself there.
So, warning everyone, be careful when working with 6L6STR's, the top of the bottle will pop into it with very little pressure. Make sure to insert these from the base, I don't know how safe the overall envelope is either, considering I did not apply very much force onto it. Needless to say, this had never happened to me before, and I've done much worse in the past.
My camera had no memory chip at the workshop today, I had brought it home. I will post pictures as soon as I can.
