  • Weird Line 6 DL4 Question

    Hello,

I have a line 6 dl4 which several years ago stopped working. I had the same problem as a previous poster in this thread where it would only function if I pressed the power adapter into the jack.

I brought it to a local music shop to have it serviced. I went back a week or so later and the tech claimed he had fixed it. He also told me that in order to fix it he had to disconnect the wires to get power from the batteries and connect them to a new power adapter jack. He claimed that the pedal did not require 9V but only 6V and that is why he did this.

He had already done the work, and it was now functioning so I dealt with it. I have used it with a 6V power supply ever since.

My question is I am considering getting one of the 1 spot power supplies and the Line 6 adapter. Will this fry my pedal because it is now connected using the battery terminals which only require 6V?

Your tech should have repaired the fault instead of cheating.

It used to work with the regular power adaptor, You simply had to press on it to make contact. That means you either had a bad adaptor jack or - and this is the more likely - the solder under the old power jack had cracked and needed repair. Even if the printed circuit copper traces were damaged, we can still easily repair it.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Yes I'm aware the tech screwed up here. But this was over 5 years ago and like I said, I was never called or notified that he was taking this route.

I know I could still probably get this fixed, but at this point my question remains the same. Will I fry the pedal running it with the 9V 1 Spot?

Making sure the polarity of your jack is compatible with the 9vOneSpot you should have no problem using it. The DC-DC power converter that's first inline with the battery+ terminal will take positive voltages between 3.5v and 11v DC. Keep in mind, there is no extra reverse polarity protection, or rectifying of AC before getting to this. The original design anticipated batteries with a limited amount of voltage and current.

If the tech gave you a 6v power supply after he rigged it, go ahead and assume he could have wired your DL4 for the adapter on hand out of convenience and switched things around. The barrel could be negative and center positive.

"The 1 SPOT is 9VDC (not AC), with a barrel-style output which is center negative." They sell an adapter that will switch this for you, or if you've become handy with a soldering iron over the last few years, you can flip the wires on your DL4 without taking it completely apart. If that's the case I will gladly walk you through it!

Know your +/-'s for sure and you'll be rockin those delays with all your other pedals!
