The two units are not the same models, but as you noted, one has been heavily modified. The work looks like it was done by a well meaning but not qualified owner. There are signs of sloppy soldering and burnt things all over the place.
The other one has had some mods added and some parts replaced, but obviously has been worked on by a tech with some experience.
I still suggest that in order to fix your bad unit you will need to go through the circuitry and try and see what was done to it. Then you will need to fix the things that were screwed up by the earlier "repair".
