  • Help with IC Switch Pops from a DG201B Chip

So I'm at the beginning stages of a simple idea, similar to the VOX Repeat Percussion. Basically it just turns your signal on and off with variable speed control.

I decided to use an analog switch IC ( Vishay DG201B) to control the switching. It basically has a signal input, a signal output and a square wave input to turn the switch on and off (just using my function generator on my trainer). Pretty simple.

The problem is that every time the "switch" turns on, it gives a nice pop. I've tried the tricks that you would do to get rid of pops from mechanical switche and nothing works.

I'm sure someone here has played around with this idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or if there is a better way?

    Thanks
    Aaron

And what tricks might those be?

Are you leaving either side of this switch unterminated under any condition? Any unterminated cap needs a DC path to ground - add a high value resistor there.

SCope the signal at this switch to see what the pop looks like.

Is there ANY DC potential at either end of the switch in any condition. And I mean is there any time there is not zero DC there.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

One of the problems with most switching IC's is the buffer circuitry on the control lines. They ensure a fast transaction, even with slowly changing control signals - so no matter how much de-glitching you do to your switching control line, the switch will still change state rapidly once the threshold is reached. This causes minimum power dissipation through the FET switching devices. It also causes "popping" with audio signals. You would be better off to use discreet FET's for your audio switching. Check out the "J" family - J112, J175 etc. - available from Mouser.
