The battery thing...
Alkaline and carbon-zinc 9v batteries are constructed differently, and age differently. When old but not drained, and powering something that draws only modest amounts of current, they can have an interesting property. They can deliver a burst of current in response to a transient, but need a few moments to recover. This can result in an interesting soft compression-like effect.
