magnetic pickup for gypsy jazz guitar

I work for the company that makes the guitar and in our original discussions with John Jorgenson (I believe your model is the DG-300), it was an important requirement that the fingerboard be extra thick to allow for a pickup to fit in just that position.

He was thinking of a Stimer, but your design is great.

BTW: it might be important to consider the type of strings and the magnetic properties of the materials used in there construction. Manouche strings are typically silver-plated copper wrapped over steel. From my expereience volume levels per string are effected as a result.

Anyway...fantastic job! Can't wait to hear what it souds like when you put the guitar through its paces.

Pickups for these guitars are definitely a challenge.

Hi, yes that's correct it is the DG-300. Nice to know a little history behind the guitar, thanks. I intalled the pickup under the strings this evening and the damn thing actually works. I just hard wired it to a jack and plugged it into my acoustic amp. First impressions were that it sounds like a single coil on an acoustic guitar (which is what it is!) but it seemed fairly warm. You're right though, the strings varied drastically in volume. The unwound b and e strings were much louder. If you have any suggestions for strings let me know. I also had a serious buzzing problem but I think that will go away once I wire the jack inside the guitar and ground it to the bridgeplate. WHen it's all setup I'll do some recording. ThAnks again for all the help!

I would consider shielding it with copper tape: top, bottom and 9/10 of the way around the coil, that will really help with some of the noise. Beyond that you'll need a dummy coil of some sort, perhaps inside, under the top?
