Here's a little humorous example of how good intentions don't guarantee good results, and why I think the review parameters are way too vague.

Last year a customer bought some of my earlier PAF attempts and said they really took him back to the early 70's and really loved 'em. He said hey my son is a professional player and is going into the studio soon to record with your pickups. He'll be recording with a vintage JTM45 or some similar dream amp. I said yeah man I need some pro player samples to highlight the set, it'd be great if you could do that. Sounds like a dream scenario right, pro touring player, studio recording with dream vintage Marshall? What could be wrong with that?

Weeeeee! Boy that's pretty bad. Surprisingly I think I recognized what he's trying to play!

Anyone else think that he's playing along with (or trying to play along with) the solo from Pink Floyd's Money? (wrong guitar too... sounds like a Tele on the record)

I'm told he's going to play samples for the LPF reviews, LOL
Just kidding, actually his Dad is a really nice guy, and who knows, maybe in ten years the kid'll be the next hot thing on the planet.

What do you think of this idea? Years ago when I was a jewelry artist I was on a forum like ours called the Orchid jewelry makers forum, hosted in Thailand. I learned a million jewelry techniques especially help with casting gold and silver which is a difficult process. There were artists from every country there from the most amazing granulation Gods to the beginners. They had a thing called the Gallery, where you could enter your best works of art, and it became a showpiece of the forum with alot of amazing pieces being shown, some of my pieces are still there.

We have alot of non-pickup makers visiting this forum who don't really know what each of us make or what we do. Why not a Pickup Maker's Showplace section with audio or video examples of each maker's best work. Maybe limit it to 3 products. That way visitors go check out all of us at once and see if they want to go from there to our individual websites.

It would be better than any shootout or review and you can represent yourself the best way that you think you should be represented. The other cool thing about it is that most of us don't really know what the rest of us make and don't have time to do that kind of surfing etc. anyway. It'd be a great place to compare how we present our products and maybe get some good ideas on how to improve marketing skills. It wouldn't be open to comments and would only be product representation and nothing added, no ratings etc. Outsiders could not post in that area and only pickup demos could be posted, nothing else.

Everyone starts off with that "plinky plinky" tone. Takes a while to get smooth sounding.

Yep, that's main problem with 95% of the sound and video clips used to advertise pickups.

                Bridge Pickups only
                All in one Les Paul
3 different sounds and 3 amps (Clean, dirty, heavy)
                Same player
                Same guitar
                Same mic
                Same pre
                Same cable
                Same pick
I don't see anything wrong with this kind of testing, in fact I'd enter ...if I could attend.

Otherwise, I'm not so keen on sending pickups off to someone that just pops up on the internet one day and wants to do a big 'ol smoke test.
(and IMHO gearslutz isn't the epitome of all things musical)

I like the idea as well. I could definately learn a lot with regards to marketing. It would be neat to have a video library of the winders here on the forum. Sounds a bit complicated though.
also, maybe there should be a sticky thread with everyone's website listed (we do it for our suppliers). That way a potential buyer can just go down the list and get an idea who we are and what we do.

He sure does, and Wolfe pops in once in a while too if I recall correctly. I think Jon from Tone For Days is a member, and has certainly posted there many, many times. I talked up a pu he made for me back in my pre-winding days (still have one in my 355).

I'm going to move this to a new thread and see if there's enough interest....

Got my own entry in at the 11th hour and got a couple of nice nods over at Gear Page. They e-mailed me for my address so they can send the pu back so I gave up nothing but the time to wind the pu, which I can then turn around and sell anyway, assuming it didn't get scratched up or something.

Will probably result in a couple of sales directly, and then some more word of mouth from there. I'm not going to make a fortune off this (didn't expect to) but I'd say it was still worth it.

I posted this and i thought this was a different pickup comparison/shoot-out but in fact i beleave its the same one that is been discussed here.

I really like the sound of the Pagey 2 Zhang, good work.

With pickups if you are a Roy Buchannan fan you want pickups that are so shrill they will make your ears bleed, if you are a heavy metal fan you want pickups that sound good tuned down to D and little treble :-)

Comparing pickups in a competitive shootout is like a bunch of artists comparing the merits of different brands of red paint, which red is better?

I thought I remembered this from the past. Taken T/Rob 5 years to get there.
ampage > Music Electronics > Guitar Tech > Pickups : 1 : do any of you gurus have pickup "shoot outs" ?
