  • 1963 Burns Black Bison lo impedance Ultra-sonic p.u's help

    Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of restoring a 1963 Burns Black Bison guitar missing the split-sound circuitry and Ultra-Sonic pickups amongst other pieces. I've been able to track down an schematic, also two of the three original circuit transformers and approx. magnet wire specs and d.c. resistance for the p.u's split coils (as far as I know, about 34 to 38 SWG with 12-14 ohm d.c.). Still missing info on the magnet (type, dimensions, placement..) and bobbin construction (already got covers for the philips polepieces style pickup).
I't be so great if anyone can shed some light on this.
Also it would be of great help anyone regarding some knowledge of the low impedance Burns split-sound circuitry.
    Thanks!

You may try to email Adeson pickups...he does vintage correct reissues of the Burns Tri-Sonics, and he may have some knowledge about those other Burns pickups you mentioned.

      Thanks a lot Greg,
Did so yesterday, and they've been of great help.
Now I'm on the way of making three replica transformers vintage specs.

I am currently rebuilding me 1962 Burns Black Bison Guitar. I have all the circuity, but missing the three pickups. I do however have photos of the original pickups and the transformers as well as a full circuit diagram and I am intending to construct the three pickups to as far as I can achieve, the original specs.
I can email you all the photos and wiring diagrams if you wish if you feel that it will be helpful. The pickups are very complex and of a strange, even eccentric design. But if I get it all correct, then the sound achieved will hopefully blow me away.

        Cheers,

        Jim

          Thanks Jim,
That would be quite helpful. I'm having the neck and mid transformers rewinded at this time, still no clue on the bridge one values/specs (that's the one I'm missing).
Also, I was succesful in finding the right magnets for the pickups. Are you planning to do the individual bobbin pickup or the twin bobbin type?.
Maybe we can share some knowledge. Have you already track down the covers, etc?
          Regards,
