I understand the coil estimator isn't exact but it can be close....

To clear up the qoute of mine you used; I used the coil estimator and using 42 awg and inputing 4090 as the resistance it came out to 5192 winds....then I inputted 6990 (the difference between 11030 and 4090) as the resistance and it came up with 5975 winds.

I used the wrong words before, sorry.

Now is this something that might come out to a total of 11.03k?

If not, then what would be a good way of splitting the winds between the two bobbins?

If you get your hands on the real pickup, you will find that each coil does not have the same resistance reading. To give an example, with an Air Norton, the green & white coil is: 5.15K, and the black & red coil is: 6.75K. Using the calculator I figured:

5166 turns of 43 AWG on screw coil

5712 turns of 44 AWG on stud coil

That was a little under, but you get the idea. If you get the real pickup you will find that they are not trying to have each coil the same resistance, but instead as the patent says:

"The coils have substantially the same number of turns of electrically conducting wire wound thereon, and the wires constituting the coils are of different gauges."

So the total is not split between them, but is the sun of two different numbers.

At the very least experiment and you might discover something you like.

Now the other patent used in that pickup places slugs that you don't see between the screws that you do see to raise the inductance. So unless you just like that look, you might be better off using two blade bobbins, since that's more or less what they did.

The patent gave three options on raising the inductance 1. using slugs or 2.using a bar that sits beneath the bobbin 3. combining 1 and 2.

What does raising the inductance do to the sound...the patent said it doesn't effect the resistance. Does it make the pickup louder?

I do like the look of this pickup too....I don't like the double blade look.

I think the double blade pickup is the logical choice.
I have a question about the blade type bobbins.
How do they attach to the baseplate?
I presume that they attach with screws, if so, the screws must be to one side cause the blade is in the middle?

It's not hypothetical, this is the research before going through with it. I'm ordering the 2 kits friday or monday hopefully. I have to wait on paypal before the transaction is completed......I just set up the account so i have to verify my bank account....

As a general info I have offered to put together two "kits" for our friend, one with double allen screw poles and one with a blade/allen screw combo. I normally doesn't sell parts or kits, but as I happened to have the blade and the blade bobbin and the other parts I offered them to him for more or less my cost.

I think this will end up with an interesting pickup, but neither I or anyone else can say if it is going to sound like "the real thing" or something unique. All I can say is good luck and let us know how it sounds in the end. And a word of worning: Pickup winding is addictive! Be careful.

I have a question about the blade type bobbins.
How do they attach to the baseplate?
I presume that they attach with screws, if so, the screws must be to one side cause the blade is in the middle?

I'm not sure how DiMarzio's bobbins mount, but the blade bobbins sold at GuitarPartsUSA have screws on both ends of the blade. The blade is wider on the top than the bottom.
