Nail Varnish ( nail polish )....it's what the girls use, yes. My wife used to go and get the clear stuff for me but hell, I don't give a toss if the girl behind the counter thinks I'm gay so I go and get it myself these days. Drying time is around 15 mins and you get your own little applicator brush in the bottle. What could be easier?

Thanks Spence! I think it may be the wire and the fact that the bobbin top is warping up and the wire is pinching between it and the rod. I guess the tension I am after is not going to happen. I guess I will have to make my tone around different parameters now which sucks ass because I am after a certain thing and cant get it with loose tension. I am going to try 1 more thing before giving up. Remove the end rods and use this 2 part epoxy I have here and reinstall them, by golly that should hold the bobbin top on and the magnet in place without the top of the bobbin wanting to pull away from the magnet. There is some Marine epoxy that is tough as steel that may work, it's white though and I would have to be careful with it.

BTW, I even moved my limiters in more too so the wire falling to the outside wouldn't have the regular tension and it still does it. Wonder if, laying down a couple of good layers with loose tension then add the right tension would stop this? It would still try to flare but the inner windings may not get squeezed in between the bobbin top and Magnet.

If that flatwork is moving you'll never stop the wire getting pinched. Super glue the magnets in there and then find a better flatwork supplier.

I hate to say it but it is MOJO stuff. It looks really good but the flat work shifts very easily. Thats why I was wondering if it was safe to use Guitar Jones. This is the pre assembled bobbins from Mojo, Maybe their individual pieces are better, just didn't want to bother with all the assembly.

Could be that bit both Spence and I have found and there is no match between top and bottom flatwork. tops are tight but the mags are pulling up out of the bottom where it's a bigger hole and allowing the top to flare up at the ends. Spence is right superglue them in.

I'll do that. Thats not too hard to accomplish. And pretty cheap too.

There's nothing wrong with SPN. One insulator isn't "better" than another, just different.

I find I get shorts if the wire gets a chance to rub on metal parts in the pickup (poles, blades, magnets, etc.) no matter how smooth they are. So I always insulate them in one way or another. Scotch Magic tape is good stuff, and thin.

I make all my bobbins now so the wire can't touch metal, but I'm not making Fender style pickups.

I like the Elektrisola SPN, but I also have some from Essex.

i find winding a strat bridge pickup is where i have flaring ,obviously ,more wire more pressure. even sometimes after super gluing , i have been able to get 7.5 k of 42 , with consistent results , but when i tried to over wound a bridge pickup with 42 heavy formvar it was a nightmare ,flaring was common , i just started using 43 heavy formvar , & I'm quite pleased with the sound

The easiest fix for that, is to cut a bigger hole and install a Humbucker!!!

David, Where is the scotch magic tape, I haven't heard of it? LOL @ Terry about the humbucker.

Ok I took some of 1/4 cloth tape and wrapped the bobbins and then I took the tough as nails stuff and reinforced the ends where the tape meets the bobbin with a coat of that. If it shorts this time, depending on which direction I throw it will be the one who ends up with it LOL. Dave up in Oregon may see it fly by him

I'm sure you have used it in your life. It's a frosted looking tape for paper. When you stick it down you can't see it.

Thanks David, duh yeah I know what it is. Just goes to show how long it has been since I used any tape like that. I didn't even know they called it magic tape now.
