It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

It was that Sam Lee Guy I bet....lol...just kiddin'. I hope it wasn't me. If it was, it wasn't intentional.
Could you give us more info on what you're referencing? I'm sure everyone on this board, at one time or another, assumed that something would work a certain way or acquired knowledge from somewhere and thought it was correct and then learned later that after testing it, it wasn't correct.Last edited by kevinT; 08-17-2010, 01:05 PM.

(and group buys)
Don't get me wrong, this is a good place and I do like hanging out here when I can, and you know the mis-information will come to light in the long run no doubt.
Metphorically speaking, people think by pee'ing in the pool they will come out on top, it's not true because they only get pee stains in their shorts for all to see. Cracks me up when some people posts things and forget about the archives and the wayback machine, nothing you post "goes away" unless a moderator deletes it and even then the wayback can often catch it.
The savvy winders will try to say something without really saying it, some use the old "I know a guy who said/did" scenario, at least they are not misleading only mis-sourcing.
Don't forget about PM and email services, if you really want/need to know something specific you can often establish a rappor with others off-line. I have noticed that most winders actually do wish to discuss and chew-the-fat about pickups winding and ideas, it's just that after all this is a public forum so most will refrain from posting their possible money-makers.

Off-topic rant...
Speaking of the group buy thing, I'm just so surprised over the years that the membership here can't pull-it-together for quantity discount group buys. I recall taking part in some nice group-buy's over on AX84 and Prodigy-Pro. At prodigy pro we got the special knobs for compressor builds and balanced input transformers.
Even little things like bobbin rivets for instance, back in '04 (I think) we did a group buy on turret lugs for making Marshall Plexi style circuit boards, they are only like 14¢/ea which isn't much, but a Plexi board takes between 80 and 100 so you just added $14 to your costs, well a bunch of us got together and managed to order several thousand and got the price down to less than a penny/ea... now that's the power of a group buy!.

Try organizing a group buy some time, they're not fun, half the ones who say they'll be there with the bucks disappear the following week leaving you holding the bill. The group buy I did here for screws was mostly by supported by members who seldom post on the forum ;-) but lurk. I kept that list in case I ever do another one, right after I hit myself on the head with a hammer 40 times to see if it hurts, LOL....http://www.SDpickups.com

I do remember your screw group buy, a private group buy for you and your select, not at all what I was talking (ranting?) about in my post above.

Tthe screw buy wan't an inexpensive deal, I forget but I think it was about $700 for each participant. 2 bailed and won't be asked again, I got stuck having to pay for 2 spots instead of one, lesson learned. Packing heavy boxes and driving wasn't much fun either, but we all got exceptional screws that aren't available anywhere on planet Earth ;-) I'll be dead before I run out probably...http://www.SDpickups.com

Wolfe had a lousy experience, too, iirc. Screw samples that were provided him were nothing like what he was eventually shipped, I forget how it all turned out. I'd think that a big part of the difficulty in buying pickup parts in bulk is the exacting requirements for the pros here, stuff like screws and keeper bars are considered more as craftwork than they are commodities.

So have you talked with your estate planner and decided who are you leaving all those screws to in your will?
(just kidding)

I didn't want to be packing 300 little tiny boxes of screws, the buy was open to everyone, but as I said mostly those who seldom post bought in. Splitting four ways was ideal because they shipped the screws in four boxes so I didn't have to count out small orders out of 40,000 screws. These were from the same company Gundry and I bought from before, they only make one version, you can't vary much of the dimensions, they turned out well but not exactly what I asked for, they were a bit dishonest in telling me I could spec flatness of the top. After it was all done, THEN they told me if I wanted them flatter they'd have to make a custom punch or whatever for big bucks. In retrospect what we got was pretty much perfect. I had them made wide heads and deep. Yeah, you're not kidding, I ain't no young chicken anymore, guys my age I know from the jam have died. My wife says when if I die before her, she's calling Goodwill to come here and shovel all this "mess" into barrels and take it away. It all looks like junk to her, like those two PAF's in a box with other "junk." My vintage pickup collection, rolls and rolls of wire. Piles of amps and guitars, man some kid shows up at Goodwill one day and there's "dead guy" deals galore, LOL.http://www.SDpickups.com

When we did our estate planning, I gathered things into certain areas of the shop and went around with my digital camera taking pictures of things, in my will all the pics have a names/numbers of who to call to come get ..."all the crap".
Of course being the smart-e-pants that I am, when it came to her turn, I replied to the question in a similar fashion ...goodwill. (was just kidding of course, ...definately eBay!)

Alternately count out a manageable number, like 100, and then weight that. Now you know how much 100 screws weights. No need to count again.
It's a little bit of work, but you wouldn't have been stuck with screws you don't need. $700 is a lot of cash these days. $100 not so much.
