  • Pickup Testing Jigs (jump on the noob)

    Greetings all,
This is my first post to this forum. I'm a noob but am enthusiastically plunging into making my own pickups. I may have the odd question now and again but I am looking forward to experimenting and learning to build from my own experiences. Something I have been thinking about for a while is building a test jig guitar and bass to swap pups in and out in a matter of seconds/minutes. Do any of you here use these? I'm guessing that routing out the body on one of my old beaters would affect the tone somewhat but it would still give a fair approximation of the pickups tonality. I look forward to hearing any input you may have. Thanks a bunch,
    Tobias

Yeah, I've got a cheap strat style guitar with quick connect mini plugs for each pickup and have sawn the pickguard apart into sections. The section with the controls stays on the guitar and the individual sections with the pickups slide in and out easily for swaps. Looks pretty gruesome but works.

I use several guitars with the pickup cavities router-ed completely through the back

I have a couple of guitars routed through the back, with little pieces of velcro glued where the pickup's adjusting screws would go. This way, I can pop new pickups in and out without all the unscrewing. If you use the right thickness of Velcro, the pickup height is automatically adjusted when you put in the pickups.

Here are some older threads that might be of interest. The tester guitar that I posted is for sale if anyone is interested. Shoot me an email.
