  • Looking for Schatten replacement Mabuchi motors

Hey gang. I know weve discussed the problems with the Schatten slowing down and sometimes to a hault. I talked to Les(nice guy) and he said hes sending me a couple motors. Problem is its been 2 weeks and my jerry rigged setup is getting a little long in the tooth. You guys know which model this thing is? The speed controller reads 8.56 VDC when its full, so I guess its 8 or 9vdc motor...

    Thanks

Hey Chris - yea he's already sending me a couple motors. Its taking a while and I'm just curious if there is a more direct buying method.

When ever I order from businesses in Canada, I request shipping from UPS. It arrives in about the same time as normal UPS ground. 4-5 days and it doesn't cost that much more.

Figure 2-3 weeks minimum via the post office from Canada. I'd skip that motor entirely and get something more suitable. What's the pulley arrangement. With that we can come up with a suitable speed range. Look over at your local hobby shop to find some decent DC motors and PWM speed controls

Theres a pic of the Schatten on stewmacs site - small motor pulley to a large one on the shaft - ends up around 800 rpm.

It's not the motor. It's his speed controller. I know this because this happened to my Schatten winder, and after talking to Les I bought a new motor from him. That lasted a few months and slowed down again.

So then I took the original motor and hooked it to the power supply that comes with the winder, and it spun like hell! So the motor is fine. The new motor did the same thing. The speed control is toast.

I was going to fix it, but in the mean time chucked my DeWalt vari-speed drill to the left axle, and it's been there ever since! It winds faster, and has more torque.

My advice is to get a new speed control, or better yet, replace the motor and the speed control for something better.

If you really want a new motor I have an extra one.

Hey David - I remember your thread about that. Les said it could be the speed controller too. I measured the final output after the speed controller and I get a steady 8.56 volts - I'll measure when it goes slow again. This motor actually IS toast, because I hooked it to my old HO scale train transformer. It spun a bit better but still would slow down. So well find out. I really wish I could get a better motor and speed controller and use the housing and all that. I just dont know about these things though.

                    +1

Here's the pulley arrangement and motor speed control.

woah! Yours is mounted internally? Mines external! Looks like the one on Stewmac.com

Mine is one of the early machines with the metal case. I got mine from Stew-Mac also. I think I got it in '06.

I've had the same problems with mine and it was caused by an underdesigned speed controller. I never fixed mine as I've moved on to bigger and more heavy duty industrial winders.

You should all look at Elepro's CNC p'up winder. Looks like a winner to me... even though I don't wind anymore. Not worth it in my neck of woods.

Well let's start with the desired speed, 800 rpm is way too slow for mortal humans so let's double that. It looks like the pulley is 1:3 so a motor with a speed or 5-6k @ 12V would be the place to start. That's where sewing machine motors come in handy. Meanwhile that optical sensor disk is going to be a problem at 2 x speeds. The hole needs to be a banana shape that goes 1/2 way around. I see thousands of pwm units for sale on ebay starting at $16. Go 16-20V at 2-5A to buy you some headroom. Surplus motors are everywhere for dirt cheap, get a small stack of different ones going by voltage and RPM, choose the one that has the right torque for your style of winding.
