  • Bucking the Hum in P-90s

I've had a few guitars come my way recently with the owners complaining about pickup noise. Unfortunately it was just normal P-90 60 cycle hum.

    So...humbucking P-90s...

I know this isn't a new concept, but I've never had one in my hands. I've seen pics of stacked designes, are they doing 4ishk on each coil or is there something else that can be done to buck the hum?

Ideally I'd want to maintain that signature P-90 tone by keeping the top coil at 8ish-k and somehow keeping the lower coil out of the equation soundwise, but still buck the hum--possible?

I have made a few p-90's & even to replaced a couple of p-100 noiseless for customers & there first reaction is my p-90 wound about 8.6k is allot hotter
So a stacked 12.5k P-100 or whatever the specs are its probably about half of what the dcr is -but this depends on if the top & bottom coil is similar in size & wire gauge & shape ( if both coils have the same gauge of wire)
P-90's are usually around 8.2k to 8.6k or higher .I don't think a stacked design will have a similar reading, probably higher but not x2

The solution is an antenna. Illitchelectronics has the patent. Illitch designed the back plate(BPSSC), which is for Strats and sold by Suhr.

The P90 has two solutions. The first being in the control cavity and the second being a large disc(dead silent) of which a portion of it replaces the OE cavity cover for mounting.

My experience was no tone variation whilst I played and Illitch switched it in and out. The product is dead silent and only saturation yields the usual amp noise.

Expensive! They have a P-90 specific product CVNCS, but it's $250.
