I'm a fan of form following function as well. But in this case I'll chalk it up to a fashion sacrifice! It looks cool. Reminiscent of the old Ricks.

    • Thanks Everyone! I'm real happy with the way the bass turned out. I didn't have a design, so I improvised as I went along. It was later on in the process when I decided to extend the neck. The bridge is tall and required a big offset between the neck and body. The long tenon helps put this in proportion. I'm surprised how well it plays on those frets. I hadn't thought about tapping on them until right now. I'll have to check that out. I've got some intermittent continuity gremlins that I have to work out on it yet. The powder coated black bridge is pissing me off. This is only the second bass I've made. I learned a bunch on these first two. It's time to build one for myself.

I'm going to work on it tomorrow. I'll try to get some better pictures.

I've been guilty of that myself.

Wow those pole pieces are sticking up pretty high! A lot of bass players don't like that because they cut up their fingers. Something to think about.

I love the black binding. Very cool looking bass.

Have to share my anti-love for those (perceived from the image) pole piece heights - that's 'handburger' waiting to happen IMO. For reference, I get complaints from players when the poles on bass pickups barely stick out above the covers.

I'm a bottom feeder and not a guitar player, so maybe skyscraper like pole pieces are OK with the plectrum wielding thin-string crowd.

                  all the best,

                  R

Thanks David, and thanks for the heads-up on the pickup.

Thanks, I wouldn't want to be responsible for any handburger. I hadn't really thought about it. I imagine I could shim the cover so that less of the poles are exposed.

                    • I don't like extended poles, even on guitar.

                      • It's the coils you want close to the strings for efficiency. Obviously they can't be too much in the way of picking, but...

Inverse square rule, and all that...

That's what I as worried about. I built a new pickup for it Saturday. Shorter magnets with heavy build wire this time.

                          • Hey guys
I'm new in this forum though I've been reading it for quite some time now.
I'd like to show you some of the guitars I've made on which I have made the pickups as well

                            • Striking. I like the cosmetics of the unmarked, but bound fingerboard. Very cool. Love the simple control layout. And that slab of wood on the body cap probably only cost as much as a car payment

                              • ehehehehe well the top IS very expensive.
                                is maple root.
and the bound fingerboard with no markers is a thing that I ultra like.
this is the one I have left, a little sunburst.
