I really wouldn't push the proper word thing too far friend, when I was in London last (9 months ago) I heard the word "Fag" used for cigarettes, "bob" and "quid" used for money (but "bob" can't be my uncle if he's money) the "tube" was used for the underground, "hack" and "hackney" was used liberally for Taxi... the list goes on, I only wish my nephew was here to help me with this post (he lives there) he could go on for hours highlighting the UK's arcane code that the children on other web sites recognise as "groovy".
You might refrain from the proper word issue a bit as what's good for you isn't always what's good for the rest of the world. Pup for pickup seems to me as like having an issue with using the work "pick" for plectrum... when in Rome...
