I really wouldn't push the proper word thing too far friend, when I was in London last (9 months ago) I heard the word "Fag" used for cigarettes, "bob" and "quid" used for money (but "bob" can't be my uncle if he's money) the "tube" was used for the underground, "hack" and "hackney" was used liberally for Taxi... the list goes on, I only wish my nephew was here to help me with this post (he lives there) he could go on for hours highlighting the UK's arcane code that the children on other web sites recognise as "groovy".

You might refrain from the proper word issue a bit as what's good for you isn't always what's good for the rest of the world. Pup for pickup seems to me as like having an issue with using the work "pick" for plectrum... when in Rome...

I respect that you may have a sucessful business with your pickups but speaking as an English chap your web site make claims that may not be provable and uses "relaxed English". This engenders a certain caution in how your products may be viewed. |Are the descriptions provable in law? Are they as accurate as your English? The spelling on your site needs work.

If my overly verbose, pompous rantings have given offense I wish to apologise unreservedly. I am an asshole (UK version arsehole) and will not do it again.

If I may comment (without wanting to cause further offense) on some of the slang quoted by RedHouse.
"Hackney carriage" is still the correct word used to describe a London Black Cab. "Quid" is probably from quid pro quo, describing exchange of equal value.
"Fag" is common slang for a cigarette, as is Gasper and Tab.
Fag also means an unpaid servant in a Boys Public school (usually a more junior scholar) as well as the US meaning of a gay person.
"Bob" was used for shilling (cannot find a reason), an old coin value now not in popular usage since decimalisation, a 10pence piece is sometimes called a "bob" but not often. As for the others who knows?

Anyway as a certain gentleman has said, lets go fishing.... and back to reading about pickups.

If you want to make friends in an English Public House (pub) you first have to talk to strangers and having a heated argument with strangers is a good way to get stabbed in London at the moment... very sad.
Pubs are not what there were once upon a time, all "local" pubs seem to have to serve bad food, cheap beer and have large television screens showing Football or other "Sports"(with loud sound) as often as possible. Intelligent conversation is not on the menu.

I have noticed over here English Gents that are provoked into a fight usually
whip the poop out of the USA guy - I have a theory on that:
"because guns are not allowed in the UK ( England?) they have evolved with better hand to hand skills then the USA men."

There was some White Notzzee Punks from OC, CAlif USA.. that were picking on a English guy - they followed him out of the bar - some kids on skateboards rode by the English Gent asked to borrow the skateboard - he turned around
and knock the Notzzee in the head and the rest ran away - next day stories in the bar were that the Notzzees were attacked by a large gang.. LOL! - The English Gent -smoked em -- good old English know how! --
