Is there any reason we would need the extended range meter Greg makes or would the meter above be enough? I'm talking pickup making only. Also I'm a little confused whether the meter measures gauss or oresteds. I thought gauss was field density and orested was field strength. Are they the same?

I'm also made humbuckers with neo magnets. I think standart range magnet meter will be not enouht to measure neo magnets. In future I will be make experiment with samarium cobalt magnets.

I hate when "that" reply comes up in forums, and specialy ones that are supposed to be all about solving software issues (like How-to-Geek, etc). I once posted in HTG asking why a particular thing with Acrobat (not reader) wasn't working in Win7 and got the usual (un-helpful) dose of "oh you should use PDF Maker, or blah, blah, blah" which turned out to be stupid non-sense because the cause was some UAC issue nothing to do with Acrobat.
(and obviously, no need to switch app's)
I personally don't like FF, tried it-don't like it, <e-o-m>.
Chrome looks sleek but no better IMHO, and I don't have a mac (David) but anyway this isn't a problem with my PC, which hasn't changed since waaaay before this double-post crap started happening, it's to do with the webpage/form handling code.
{Edit} Brings to mind all those saying the same thing back when we were having that weird long-run-off-page-view thing happening here, which mysteriously "solved itself" without switching to alternate browsers.... hmmm.
{Edit, Edit} I don't mean for this reply to sound mean/nasty/rude, just get tired of that whole thing.

Yeah, both, and I had a record month this July (thank goodness).
I'm having a great August too, BTW do you recognise anyone in this picture?
(hint: I'm the one with the Classic Amplification t-shirt)
This was his birthday (Friday 8-17) and mine the following Monday.
Here's my vintage wife posing with his vintage gear, I just love vintage stuff (LOL)
and his early 50's Strat and a very nice guy named Bill (his Amp/Guitar tech).
here's Bill, me, and Dustin (EJ's guitar tech) it was Dustin who invited us this day:
you can see EJ playing a Coronado he just bought the day before (in Portland Oregon)
, here's a better pic of the Coronado:
which had a bad pot and Bill was trying to do something for it during the sound check:
Talk about a bunch of nice guy's, this was my first experience with some good 'ol boys from Texas.Last edited by RedHouse; 08-28-2012, 03:41 AM.

I cut a piece of hollow rectangular plastic stock (from a hobby shop, probably some model railroad stuff) and slipped it over the Hall sensor extension on Greg's meter. One reason is that the area of interest for me to measure is rarely in contact with a magnet or pole piece, but rather is 3/32" or so above it, where the string might be at its closest position. This also has the effect of allowing the meter to read stronger mags without pegging.

Sometimes it helps if you go to "go advanced" before you post and then you only get one post.........sometimes....http://www.SDpickups.com

As far as which meter you need, as FieldWrangler mentions in post #27 of this thread, you can use a spacer to get the meter probe further away from the magnet to do your measurements, as long as you are only interested in comparing a number of magnets all measured at that same distance. The strength (flux density) of a small magnet drops off rapidly as you move away from the pole. A meter that is limited to 1700 Gauss would peg when placed right against even a small neodymium magnet, but would not peg if moved even 1/8" away. If you are trying to reproduce a set of magnets from one pickup (original) to another (copy), they have to be measured at the same distance to get a valid comparison.
Trying hard to give info without blatant advertising.
