It's a great thing for Will and he seems like a nice enough guy, but I wish the forum would branch out a little--not just relating to pickups, but general tech, luthery, etc also. It's as if no one else has anything valuable to contribute and it's very limiting.

It's nice that Possum and Spence still chime in once in a while. I always enjoy their posts.
I drop in there because I like Les Pauls.
But I don't feel very comfortable posting about my pickups there.
It's not Wills fault. Wills asked me to post my pickups there. Actually Will is local to me and is a good guy. The members are so into WB pups that it feels like blasphemy to talk about another brand of pickups there.

All in all the members are missing out on other great pickup options by creating the anti other guys vibe they have going there.

As you know I posted a much better idea that would have benefitted alot of homeless people but I don't think one single forum member even commented on that idea, bottom line is alot of "members" saying this is a great idea as long as they aren't personally involved and don't have to do any work. I have alot of serious health issues to deal with and am self employed so have precious little time to hand out. Get it together and get it going and I'll reconsider.
Dave .. The charity is almost in place and if run properly .. By Me .. It should send almost $500 to $1000 each time we do it .. Depending on how many winders participate !! I believe WB and Wolftone are already on track as I thought you and Spence were ??Maybe if you had bothered to communicate back to me any of the many times I tried to talk to you ! You might have more details !! I have what I believe to be a GREAT charity associated with the MyLesPaul Tesla Charity pickup project ! I am just waiting on confirmations to be made !!

Just count me out of the whole Charity thing. I had no freakin idea it would be so hard to find a partner to work with............

          Good luck with it

I read all the emails on the mlp forum about this charity endeavour. It's probably not the place or time for me to say anything about it now but i'm going to anyway.... I think the creator and other folks are making it harder than it really needs to be. All you have to do is just get makers to donate a set of their own pickups and auction it off. Each week feature the pickupmaker in a short bio and highlight the particular pickup model. Promote the hell of it on myspace and other places. This way each pickup maker will have their own name and product in the limelight as well as generate funds for the charity.

Plus you'll have more pickups to sell having each individual pickup maker donate at least one set. More sets equates to more funds for the charity.

            anyway...just my 1 cent.

It certainly seems strange there at times. Can someone point me in the direction of a few unbiased PAF replica / LP historic parts threads - I'm interested.

                    Amen Kevin....

The MLP guys seem resistant to suggestios that would make something actually work. I suggested they drop the whole thing and put up a thread where members would sign a pledge that they'd give $20 to a local homeless shelter, then put their name down when they did. They could theoretically raise $10,000 if they really have 500 members. That scared all the members off the thread, which to me says this really isn't about helping out needy people.

Selling a couple pickups for charity on Ebay isn't going to raise much money really.

The idea of "teams" doesn't work and a collaborational pickup isn't likely to be anything good. Good pickups are made by one person through a long process of experimentation and live testing at gigs. So many of us use the same parts anyway, sharing parts is a joke. The forum guys don't understand this. So Kevin is right, just donate a set of pickups and its a done deal and cuts out all the bullshit. I don't think they are going to listen though, it took a long time just to get them off this idea of a "Tesla Coil Winders" group, when none of us wind Tesla coils. I offered to do a logo but sure wasn't going to do a logo for Tesla coil winders.

I'd be happy to donate a set of pickups or one pickup to such a venture but they haven't even said what charity they are targeting. Initially it was the American Cancer Society, a group that thinks chemotherapy and eating margarine are healthy things to do, I wanted none of that

The other problem is they don't have enough winders involved, I'm sure not going to keep donating pickups every other week to keep it going, they should be contacting guys like Lollar and Fralin who don't have to break a sweat by giving away free stuff.

I bailed on this for now because I didn't like being yelled at for expressing my concerns and trying to bring a sense of reality to what they want to do, their ideas so far don't work and will have little outcome in my opinion. I don't have time to yak on the phone either and dislike that kind of thing. Ok, Bobbo your turn

the other thing I had a problem with is that there is no participation by the bulk of the forum members. That a big mistake if you truly are trying to raise money for needy people; my homeless shelter idea got EVERYONE involved not just a handful of pickup makers. By involving alot of people you raise more money, no one seemed to get that idea?

There is something that struck me funny, Will had an auction on ebay for a set of his Pickups for only 167.00 buy it now, not 1 bid the whole time it was listed.

Ebay has gone to the dogs as far as ever selling pickups on there. People like GFS and all the other cheapie Pu's and all the dealers of Seymour PU's and Fralin etc.... flood ebay with page fulls of their stuff and the real small guy seller who has 1 set or even 1 pickup gets lost in the endless listings of crap. I dont see Ebay as a good outlet for this whole charity thing anyway. I mean really, people are on ebay to snag a deal right? Just my .02 woth

                            Ebay....

I think the only ones selling on Ebay are the StewMac winder guys who don't really know what they are doing and not really making any money at, just building a reputation built out of air, a reputation for cheap pickups.

Dave, I thought the same thing. The unorganized aspect of it and all, and I bailed the idea. I thought about it for awhile and included myself in again. I also talked to bobbo today and chated for awhile. I understand everyone works for their cheese, so It may take some time to get it organized. There are also legal issues as well to hinder for the advertised charity. This can work in everyones favor, and can actually work. You know me, I don;t give shit for free- Ever!!Never Ever!! But I do think for the greater of things without any expectation of anything in return is rewarding in its own way. I have no time for nothing right now but orders, but I can squeeze this in. From what I understand this may take a bit of time anyway....Nothing to loose. Everything to gain as a humble person. I guess we will see in time is all. Perhaps they may auction it off right on the MLP for everyone to see?

                                ....

I'm still very skeptical, so if they get their shit together convince me at least I'll listen. For me, though, I sent some money to our local homeless shelter, so basically a couple guys get to eat a few meals and a place to sleep and maybe some job training, so I'm done. No legal problems with that, no egos to stroke, and someone got some help they needed, this other shit is too complex and isn't going to help do much of anything in my opinion. Get ALL the members involved and giving up something instead of a bunch of blow hards cheering from the sidelines while contributing nothing. Everyone has to give something or I'm out.
