  • So whats so special about these?

I browse ebay all the time and the Big dipper "Mayher" set is going for insane prices. Anybody know anything about these and whats so special and what makes them what they are? Please, I'm dieing to know.........

I might be wrong but aren't they just supposed to be the John Mayer single sig pickups? Because they are fender they sell for double what they are worth and because they are a sig pickup that doubles fenders already inflated price.

They are "Big Dipper" pickups available only in the John Mayer signature Strat. They aren't sold separately at this time. They apparently have a scooped midrange. They are hard to get so the prices are high. That's the deal.

oh yeah, i'm vintage and i'm modern, i love all good tone. After listening to some of Possum's blues chops, i have actually gotten into more vintage sound and blues playing. Lots of feeling and soul in Blues....great stuff.

However, I am a METAL HEAD through and through....always will be. And YES I have 5 Deans in my arsenal. Eat your heart out Dave My favorite is #93/100 Michael Schenker's signed Signature V...the thing smokes....feels and sounds better than many les pauls that i've tried....whooops is that taboo to talk about les pauls that way?

Got your email. looks great. need some pricing.

sorry....didn't mean to hijack the thread....back to the topic...

                    Hey Guys

I just got one in yesterday for a repair or rewind, depending on what shape it was in, well i repaired it. Had to take off about 500 winds but it is still ok. Still doing some testing at the moment to see just what is going on with the tone but first impressions, not really thrilled. Kinda lame actually. The bridge is really close to 7K and powerful enough but lacks a lot of things, cut, high end, all the things a good bridge pickup should have. It is supposed to be scooped mids right? Actually you can get a pretty good imitation of a hot wound tele bridge out of it, i wouldnt call that scooped mids. The big thing is the TPL, a whoping 250 TPL. Seems like loose tension was used as well. As far as wire, me thinks it is 42 formvar, but may be something between heavy and regular, I have no way to measure it but its def not heavy Formvar. Mags, not sure either, hell they could be A3's as far as I know, again no way to test this. Anyone have anymore questions ask away, i'll be happy to do what I can to answer them about this beast.

                      heres the spec,s
                      6.11n
                      6.41m
                      7.57b

cool specs --- but I'd rather have them would by one of us - over Fenner!

the scooped mids was related to the 6k units.. I do not think the name ever applied to the bridge and it was marketings idea to name them i'm sure..

If anyone here knows how to scoop mids out of a 7.57k bridge.. please spill the beans.. and splain if ya would.. cause I'm drawin a blank on that one.

I'd like two scoops of midrange, please. And with sprinkles.

Ah.. well that's like larger gauge vs. smaller gauge. So you get less mids. Not really scooped as much as more top end?

I've done it but I had to significantly change the shape of the bobbin. If a pickup is 7K+ and has a "normal" shaped bobbin I don't have a clue how to scoop the mids either. Perhaps Neodymium would do it but I'm sure that wasn't the secret behind the fender pickups.

I too would love to hear any info on how to give a single coil pickup with that kind of resistance “scooped mids” without changing the shape of the pickup.

Well Damn, I guess I need the whole dang set. I guess the neck and middle are completely different than the bridge. Oh well, notes taken on the bridge anyway, will save for later if I get my hands on the other 2.
