  • Reducing magnet strength

I finally wound a few pickups with A5's (a strat set and one pickup so far of a humbucker set for bass) after sometime in building a winder. I'm happy with the sound of the strat pickups but they are slightly harsh, something I can live with by dropping the tone. However, the magnets are at full strength and I noticed that the strings don't sustain as much. When I lower the pickups it improves the sustain slightly though not really enough.

So, my question is how can I reduce the strength of the magnets? I don't have a demagnetiser and will not buying something like that, so any simple way with readily available tooling (if it's really required) would suffice. Any comments on how people are doing this and any issues would be helpful.

There is a comment in one of the archived threads that passing another pickup over a pickup will demagnetise it slightly. Ok, sounds good. However, what if you only have one pickup? I suppose I could make a jig where I can insert magnets to pass like poles over each other.

If using this method, will the magnetism only be reduced at the poles that was passed over by the other pickup, rather than demagnetising over the whole magnet?

How much reduction will occur with the magnets at a very close distance (I'll approach it by trial and error)? Is there a limit to the demagnetisation if this method is used with A5's?

i push a bar magnet ( C8 ) towards the poles if need be ( without actually touching them ), it works for me , I don't notice any dramas doing it this way but as for accuracy ?? you might need a gaussmeter , I have never fully demagnetised a pickup this way..thats not to say it can't be done?

      demag....

using a ceramic bar magnet works, you can't really totally demagnetize the magnets that way, they will hit a point where they won't drop any further. you can also use a tape head demagnetizer or a bulk tape eraser these work more drastically and CAN totally kill the charge in your magnets. I wouldn't use another pickup to do the demaggin as you will end up with two weak pickups as they will both end up demagged. You can only really know what you are really doing by getting a real gaussmeter. If you can charge your magnets then deguassing them isn't do or die, you can charge with neo magnets of sufficient strength.....

Thanks for that. I have a few ceramic bar magnets here, so I'll try one.

Is this the type of demagnetizer that you're using? Quite a few on ebay ranging in price from 12.95 to 24.95.

Shit Mick, you haven't been using a squirmy rooter to degauss your magnets have you?

Mine has the super duper squirmy rooter model with all the bells and whistles (flashing lights, etc...) It doesn't degauss mags but it sure does make her happy when i'm not around.

                  ........

yes those will work but they are so small you probably can only do one pole at a time, Ihave one around here somehwere but never tried it, I use a bulk tape eraser made by Radio Shack, its almost too strong and can kill a pickup in less than a second, I keep it above the pickup a couple inches. Thing is you can use it while the pickup is in the guitar then recharge with a neo if you went too far....
