I finally wound a few pickups with A5's (a strat set and one pickup so far of a humbucker set for bass) after sometime in building a winder. I'm happy with the sound of the strat pickups but they are slightly harsh, something I can live with by dropping the tone. However, the magnets are at full strength and I noticed that the strings don't sustain as much. When I lower the pickups it improves the sustain slightly though not really enough.
So, my question is how can I reduce the strength of the magnets? I don't have a demagnetiser and will not buying something like that, so any simple way with readily available tooling (if it's really required) would suffice. Any comments on how people are doing this and any issues would be helpful.
There is a comment in one of the archived threads that passing another pickup over a pickup will demagnetise it slightly. Ok, sounds good. However, what if you only have one pickup? I suppose I could make a jig where I can insert magnets to pass like poles over each other.
If using this method, will the magnetism only be reduced at the poles that was passed over by the other pickup, rather than demagnetising over the whole magnet?
How much reduction will occur with the magnets at a very close distance (I'll approach it by trial and error)? Is there a limit to the demagnetisation if this method is used with A5's?
Regards,
Michael
