  • Help with this pickup - odd bobbin

Hi, doing a rewind on this dead pup. I could use any ideas on how to get this wind done. I have done some Danelectros and used a 'loss' bobbin for those. This needs to be crammed into that boxed bobbin??

    Thanks

    Just thinking out loud here.
What if you didn't use the pink bobbin holder?
Take the blade in the middle and make a bobbin out of thin fiber or epoxied thin cardboard.
Tape over the blade and with little tension wind over the taped upblade making a one piece bobbin.
Maybe do some paper, or cloth taping over and around it when done.
Put it back in the pickup.
You will need to leave enough blade sticking through to contact the magnets.

      blade

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. The blade is epoxied to the magnets. I suppose I could force it apart, but i am still looking for an alternative method that would allow me to re-stuff the original…. if possible.

Work out the inside length you need with a piece of string then wind it as an aircoil around a pair of strat strap buttons set to that length. Wax dip the coil then tease it into shape and allow to set before taping it up. The shape don't matter while you wind so as long as length is right even 3 buttons would do it then a few bits of cotton to tie it or small bits of tape to keep it together while potting.

Ok, interesting. So set up a jig with two strap buttons or the like with the correct inside length, then release the retainers and then cotton ties, tape wrap, wax dip…. tata.

I see that mojotone has a blade bobbin that might do the trick as feel, in which case i could loose the open ended bobbin. I have some options now. Wondering if anyone has seen this type pickup before.

Cotton ties before you release it or you will just have a pile of wire, then pot and tease into shape before you tape. You can still do another quick dip if you want the tape waxed. Plain cloth tape about 1/4 in wide is the norm rather than masking tape.

Can you shed any info on the cloth tape supplier? Will any do.

              Thanks

I use stuff from a local haberdashery supplier the type women use for sewing. I'm in the uk so wherever you are you will have to track a shop down.

Hi Those things are a nightmare to do. I've done a couple which had wax holding the whole thing together. They end up not being economical because of the time involved, I just did them as a favour for some regular customers.

                  Cheers

Yes, its been a bit time consuming. What would you reckon a fair price for the whole job, if I may ask.

My shop rate is $75 an hour for stuff like that unless it's for a friend, a pro or I've been subcontracted to do the work. (I'll just say that I have a lot of friends.)

Can someone explain how it works?
                        It is a Single Coil?
Does the screws do anything, or just the blade in the middle?

Its like a P90 except that the magnets transfer to the blade and the screws as well. Once the bobbin is in there is a black thin shield of plastic like material that covers the blade and the coil. I have not heard the pickup yet so I cannot comment on tone.

Great Waldo, how did you tackle the bobbin issue. As of now I have made a temp bobbin out of plexi with two screws spaced correctly. I have some shrink wrap on the screws and may add some wax paper on the surfaces as well. Then I can do the wind and wax pot, remove the screws, separate the coil, wrap with paper, install. I am already close to three hours work on this pup!!!

                              Hi Angelodp

I ended up making a bobbin core with kabuki tape (tamiya model masking tape, the yellow stuff) around the core and waxed the coil. I then took the coil off the bobbin and taped the inside of the pickup, dumped the original coil holder beforehand. then the coil was laid in the tape and taped over and waxed poured over to hold the coil down. Closed the whole pup and gave it a wax bath (quick soak just to let the wax run in and help solidify the insides) It did actually work. it probably wasn't the right way of doing it but it worked. Next time I would refuse the job or charge some ridiculous price to cover the time and hassle.
                              Cheers
