The problem with carbon dating is that it requires that something like a cubic centimeter of material be removed and destroyed.

FYI modern AMS radiocarbon dating requires as little as 1 mg of carbon or about 2 mg of wood, it is however not terribly accurate on such young samples as 200-500 years
