    cool down...

no need to get flustered, everyone has their opinion and experience, we're all making stuff thats way different from eachother.

Back to the conversation.....the marketing description Gibson uses in that website link is a really good explanation of the difference between a hand wound bucker and a straight machine wind as far as frequency response goes. Kevin asked whats the diff between a hand wound and a machine wind, well there it is. A straight machine wind puts the wire down in a repetitive pattern the same each layer, in hand winding its more scrambled, this tends to boost the mids and cut the highs, which works real well for single coils. The useful thing for me with machine winds is you can get alot brighter definitive tone if you want it. I never could understand why alot of vintage P90s had almost a strat like tone, until I wound one on my first autowinder, suddenly I was able to nail that tone.

Were the P90's machine wound too ?.Oh Lord my world is ending , sob , sniffle....but wait a minute , mine are handwound and sound like strat pickups , if I voice for it , Hoorahh , the sun is out , the sky is Blu..well sort of , few clods ( I meant clouds sorry , so all you clods settle a bit , steady steady..don't go
off )about but the last week of winter we had a day @ 27C....going to be a long hot summer , there is an area of depression moving in which could lead to something inclement but...I'll go indoors if that happens..yahaay , just found a local wire supplier too... $30A per kilo for wire....bout fucking time...Oh sorry did I wander off topic...

Why not everyone just wind what they want and screw what everybody else thinks. I still don't know what got this whole damn thing heated but it's rather fucking juvenile if you ask me. Why does everything have to turn out in a damn argument anyway?????????????

Um, did I read this wrong and am I taking this statement wrong? I tend to do that from time to time, well all the time, so sue me..
        madialex,

Chill. I am not mad, I was trying to make a joke. Really, call me Bozo for all I care. I am always amazed how stuff that is said tongue in cheek on these forums gets past people.

My point is that the actual mechanics of hand winding a pickup are simple, super simple. It is the routine that is established that is the hard part. The actual execution really could be done by a 5 year old. This is why I am amazed that people are not tripping over themselves to experiment with a computerized winder. It offers controls and possibilities that cannot be achieved by hand winding. You can establish winding routines with a computer that can't be done with hand winding. That is not to say that it is a replacement for hand winding. It is not an either or proposition. It is very satisfying to hand wind pickups, there is a real sense of ownership once you are done. But it is just as satisfying wo wind with a computer controlled machine. More control, more repeatability and more options and time for experimentation.
They don't make them like they used to... We do.

Just as I thought. Everyone on this forum really is drunk. Now I don't feel so alone.

I'm late to the game as usual and probably somebody has already covered this angle but here goes:

My understanding of what "hand wound" means is just hand-guided, meaning the traverse of the wire is guided by hand, not that the wire is laid on entirely by hand like rolling up a ball of yarn.

For what it's worth, I have no idea if the Leesona was hand-guided or had an automatic traverse.

I believe the Leesona had automatic traverse.

We'll be able to pick Jon's brain now because he bought the Leesona 102 that was up on ebay that i posted a link for.

                      I have the manual too.

Of course its an automated traverse what you think we've been talking about endless here :-) The traverse is set with gears, the machine stays stuck on one number of winds per pass and you can only vary it by using gear sets. Uses a crude tensioner also. Those machines were also used to wind yarn and other textile uses, they weren't really known for coil winders very much mostly textiles.....

I bought the manual too to see if anything can be gleaned from it and applied to modern machines.
