Yeah, I'm surprised we don't get a little more traffic/help.
I just found another 50 patents to add to the list.

At some point, a few people need to help classify them
as to pickup type so that they can be referenced on
    the as-yet-uncreated single/P90/stacked/PAF/Blade/saddlebag/bass/other
    pickup type pages.

    In other news,
Every time I see another wire vendor mentioned, I add them to the vendor lists.

I must have missed something but that's nothing new...

It took me a half an hour to add two, I backed it up on my computer in case someone else was editing at the same time.

That cell structured thing you have looks a lot better.

174 pickup patents in a spreadsheet

        First, thanks for helping out.

The pickup patent list lacks titles in about 70 cases.
I need help filling it in.
It is in CSV format so anyone can import it.
        We can merge changes later

        Get it here:
        http://www.salvarsan.org/download/PickupPatents.csv

If you want to add a patent to the Wiki table, use the Wiki markup language.
I changed it from HTML to simplify editing.

An entry for Larry's patent that looks like this
444274 Apr 1984 DiMarzio Electrical pickup for a stringed instrument having ferromagnetic strings

        has a markup like this:
        |-
        |4442749
        |Apr 1984
        |DiMarzio
        |Electrical pickup for a stringed instrument having ferromagnetic strings
        |-

Leave the USPTO patent URL for me to fill in later if composing the link
is too much trouble, which it almost is.

        Thanks again,

          Hey, you guys are great!

I have some really exciting data on guitar and bass pickups that needs to be re-formulated for a web page from an excel spreadsheet but there are too many cells to fit in a browser window across side to side...

Please look this over and let me know what would make a reasonable presentation. There are also photos and magnetic scans of each pickup and sillyscope graphs of frequency response over the sound spectrum. This is extraordinary data for literally hundreds of pickups but it need a better interface for presentation on the web. The scanning is an on-going project too so we can keep adding to the list.

(I'll send you the xls doc via email, just ask via PM) I need a real email address in order to send an attachment...

            Sample Web Site with Resources

If you want to post patents as a prime resource, check out the following web site about metal detecting to see how this webmaster integrated patents.

            http://geotech.thunting.com/cgi-bin/...&file=main.dat

The geotech metal detecting forum is very active and has the kind or resources that this Music Electronics Forum could evolve into. Once an issue had been "beaten to death and resolved" a summary of the collective wisdom could be posted in a pdf format to be downloaded as a useful resource. One of my pulse induction (PI) coil articles is posted on this web site and answers a lot of questions that many people have who want to design their own PI coils. http://geotech.thunting.com/cgi-bin/...oils/index.dat This is just a thought to help this forum evolve.

I can give my list of patents, which are actually a bunch of folders with PDF files. I don't have time (or energy) to sort them into the Wiki however....

Regarding classifying patents into pickup type - would it make sense to add a column to the tabular format now before the list expands much more? Or is there a better solution that's escaping me (likely)?

Hey, on the Wiki, it lists "Alumitone by Agi-Lace US Patent 6,897,369 Sensor assembly for stringed musical instruments (Lace, 2005)"

That's not the Alumitone. It doesn't even look like it.

The Alumitone patent is actually the two Transsensor patents:

                  5831196
                  5767431

6897369 is derived from those two, but is something totally different, having a central blade pole.

The main difference between the Transsensor and Alumitone is what they are made out of. The Transsensor is copper.

Dave Kerr has an excellent point re the coil type column now rather than later..

Or we could just group them by type but what about stuff that falls between the type cracks?

If a wiki can do tables can it do sorting via server side includes..

Proliferation of table fields and server-side sorting

Yes, we can put in more table columns.

That's why I made the patent list into a .csv data file.
Using Open Calc (open office) I can sort it, make sublists,
add columns trivially, then turn it into a HTML, or write an application
that generates wiki markups from .csv data files.

Again, the pickup patent list is available at
                        http://www.salvarsan.org/download/PickupPatents.csv

Those are the tools I know for now, until one of us figures
how to do server-side sorts on demand, although that could
be a web app off-site from the wiki.

[grumble]... OK I'll do that today. Been having an awful time with my DSL the past week... seems to be working now for more than five minutes at a time...
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

OK, I added Dave S's lists in shell form, dates, patent holders etc to be added/cleaned up/ verified as required.

                              Pickup specs

The average noob will want specs for pickups through the ages.
It may be time to start a list of pickups according to core + bobbin dimensions,
                              and windings.

I have put up a table of pickup wind counts.
                              It is inaccurate.
Needs checking, magnet types, addition of more bass pickups, etc.

                              See http://www.pickupedia.info/index.php/Specifications

                                Magnet Specs

The Alnico In Brief page from
                                http://www.salvarsan.org/content/alnico.html
has been Wiki-ified and added to the Pickupedia at
                                http://www.pickupedia.info/Magnets

We need entries for ceramic magnets, rare earth types,
and antique steel and CuNiFe types.

Assume that I will do it eventually.
