I wonder why they did that anyway? (cut off the bottom bobbin) seems like kinda weird. Maybe the plasic mold process had some flaw that was easily removed by cutting off the bobbin flange.
It was probably made to fit a certain baseplate or cover... or something.

No one spends the money to have a die made wrong.

Here's the specs for that pickup You can see in the drawing that the bottom flange is shorter.

It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

Well sure "we" don't ...but in China... perhaps they considered the bottom of the bobbin insignificant to the function.

Reminds me of when I was a kid (a long time ago) Japan was "the" new frontier in manufacturing things cheap, but made in Japan stuff wasn't very good (back then) and they did odd things much like this, until of course they wised-up and started doing things properly (cough, cough, Pioneer, Sony, Ibanez) they started seeing the virtue in things they made out of their scope.

BTW nice link David thanks, I also see that the "Eastwood" mini-hum is there as part number MHB_F-CR and others like many of the "GFS" branded pickups

Ive been to China, my brother lives there. Half their stuff is still the cheap "dime-store trinket" stuff. The rest is..... well, all I can say is we better look out. When you get 1.3 billion people making good products cheaply, the western world is in trouble. India won't be far behind China.

Those are the bobbins that I use most of the time. As said earlier in the thread they just look so much better (on the top) than most of the others out there. StewMac bobbins always have some kind of scratches/tool marks or something around every hole. I'm afraid of customer complaints, they really look bad to me. I only use them if I'm going to cover them. I haven't had any problems with the bottom flange on the GJs. Always thought it was a way to get the pigtails out of the coil. If I overwind, I just make sure that I cover it well with paper tape.

probably made them that way to make some room for the wires as you're doing the final taping.

I find that those bobbins without the solid middle tend to make the pickup a wee bit brighter.

I know this is an older thread, I like the flat on the bottom of the bobbin...I can slip my leads down it and tape it off instead of using a hole.
