  • MLP....Just in case

You know how it is over there....Just in case it gets nuked, and everyones Mail is invaded : )

In response to : best Paf Clone

Wow, I've never seen so much disrespect in regards to ones comments (Dave Stevens) regarding replicating True Paf tones in a topic that is labled appropriately "best paf Clone" let alone the guy getting shot in the back in the same army? Wtf guys ??? I guess noone can state their results and hard work puplicly without s@!tty comments and negative vibes! Here are some scientific and proven terms which may help to clarify what others have not had the experience of learning and are nieve to facts:

Si (silicone)is to increase the resistivity and reduce eddy currents in AC applications. Si gives the best results in resistivity with the least harm and interference to other properties. Here are two: saturation(B) and core loss (related to H and construction details). permeability matters if you are not magnetizing to high field strengths. Fe (iron), any trace impurity will decrease the Bmax and perm. At low levels almost every type of impurity will have an effect (china material, impureitys in mixtures...unless garanteed and tested through vaporizing). Cold working and strain (bending or shaving) will harm the Magnetic properties also. For transfering the magnetic properties, the lower the carbon the better, so 1002 would usually be better than say 1018 (what 99% of makers use : ) for magnetic application. This is scientific and can be proved and seen in Eq curves...Bmax vs concentration curves. Impurities (Inferior steels not of tight tolerences, this is what makes us winders different and unique) in Fe in Bozorth silicon steel. It has a lower saturation flux density than plain low carbon steel. Silicon steel does have advantages if your electromagnet is going to operate and transfer magnetic properties...Tesla would have known this and used this to his advantage- Thats also proven, and he really should get credit because he really was the first one to invent the radio....Look it up

Perhaps befor being too judgemental and critisize one's quest to achieve true replication of vintage tones, you should first know the amount of information and dedication it takes to discover and research these things. Being judgemental in something you have no experience in is nieve. Its such a shame to see other makers discredit another in public in a topic that you really have to have experience in, and clearly you over looked and took as plain, normal, Nieve, eye of the beholder, etc This is blantantly why i very rarely have this address in my browser. Lets respect eachother and eachothers opinions- Not discredit and be arrogant pricks on things you have no knowledge of..
    PEACE....

Everyone here knows "no disrespect to WB here" that that whole forum revolves around Wills pickups and anyone who trys to be different than him will get the wrath of hell thrown at them... I rarely even post anymore there. Although the WB hype had settled down a little for a while Will is doing another try em before you buy em thing and the same ol people are starting to say the same ol things about his pickups which is fine but c'mon over and over by the same bunch of guys gets a little tiresome. It's like the Will Posse, scanning threads and looking for prime times to jump in and start gushing forth all the same shit everyone has heard a million times there. It's mind numbing at times at how fast you can go there and leave within seconds because of the same shit being regurgitated over and over and over. Better not have an opinion different than what they believe or you will be publicly scorned or even banned. LOL Bobbo was banned for his anti war opinion and his opinion of the great shit head Bush. In the same post another member is praising the Vets for their efforts which by the way included our freedoms, one of which is the freedom of speech LOL LOL LOL. Funniest shit I have ever seen there. CONFORM OR YOU CANT PLAY HERE kind of mentality. Someone on the radio said it best yesterday, Bush doesn't think of himself as president he thinks it's more like King Bush, his way or no way at all. He is king of the Veto......There are other issues I am having there as well but will not publicly call anyone out. Later dudes...

I don't know, it sucks from a competing pickup winder perspective, but if I was WB I would be pretty happy! Great free advertising with people around to bury anything negative said about you.

And Madialex, are you serious? Bush as king of the Veto? Please, he didn't pick up the red-pen for the first 6 years of his administration and that is why our rampant entitlement spending continues from both left and right..... Its more like he was the rider on an out of control horse (the governemnet) and he left his veto whip at home!

Man, I was just trying to point out that from my research and hard work and throwing money down a hole that PAFs sound that way because of the metals in them. WB doesn't want to hear that. Lets see him put up a video of his own comparing a real PAF against his work. Or anyone there for that matter. Guitar Jones parts will never sound like a real PAF, if they did I'd have box loads of that stuff around here you better believe it! Anyway, I think I'm going to stay out of that thread now, if they want to bury their heads in the sand and proclaim that the world is flat thats fine, god forbid I should spark anyone there to look outside the box and see whats really going on. Someone posted a sound clip of WB's pickups in middle position and well they sound great, but they don't sound like real PAFs in middle position at all. They just don't get it. Full moon is making me crazy here....

I think sometimes people just don't get it, possum, then they kinda get a little defensive and rude from that.
It is a shame that some definitive answers that should shine a light, get branded, shunned, and disregarded in a negative manner at times...

Stay away and never go back unless it's to lurk and laugh. Really I don't see why any self respecting maker would ever post there if they know the history of the place. It's non stop mini dramas. Only head cases and assholes want to take part in a forum like that. Why give them an audience?
They don't make them like they used to... We do.

              ....

As you can tell by the title...."Just in case". I'm aware of the monitoring and general manipulation but I could'nt stand there watching Dave get torched for knowing true things and expressing his ideals and opinions. I guess now we can just say "What did you expect, its the MyLesPaul forum"....
Its clear some have overlooked these little heathens of metal and are doing as best they can with what they can get....nothing wrong with that. DO your thang!!
Dave....I didn't say you didn't have experience in these things btw, that was aimed to those that do not know the difference. At any rate, its all about learning and thats what we are here for.
Seems, some things never change= MLP

MLP is terrible and why any of us waste time there is beyond me.
At least as far as us pickup makers goes.
I wont ever present my work over there again.
It doesn't matter how great your work is, it's Will Boggs private live advertisment and dont step on his toes or you guys knows what happens.

                My Friday rant is done.

Eventually everyone there will own his pickups.. that's the end of that market!

I went there once to look around, and that was enough!

My guitar making partner, who owns like 20 Les Pauls, and knows more about the damn things than most people, got into the same debates with morons there over the usual crap like neck tenon length and the damn gaps Gibson leaves in the neck pocket.

He had to post photos of two Les Pauls cut in half to prove his point, and they still didn't listen!

Here's some of his toys. Check out the LP the Explorer headstock!

He built 3 guitars in the back row next to the LP Custom and bulls eye Charvel.

                    ....

Well, I was trying to shed a little education and light, I kind of expected some of that, and actually they were nicer than usual, most of them. sometimes guys who lurk and don't post contact me and buy stuff too. Flik sent some nice private emails, so they're not all bad. Heck if someone landed here and started saying he knew something about why PAFs sound that way I sure wouldn't try to trash the guy, and I would probably try out what he was describing. I do get bored with the "forum mentality" that you find in most forums, where if you really know what you are talking about and have good products to sell, someone will eventually try to make you look stupid. Oh well......

Safety in numbers I guess... they all get to know each other, so they all feel like they fit in, and have some sort of notoriety of some such nonsense.

When someone new comes in and challenges their misinformation, they no longer feel safe, so they attack the new person.

This forum, as well as the other one I frequent a lot (mimf.com) is a lot more open minded than many. The other one I read, talkbass.com can be filed with the total clueless, but at least they will often stop and listen to you when you correct them.

I'm spending less and less time at that forum.

It's simply not an open forum. If your opinion differs from a couple of guys there (even if you add something in agreement) they hose you down.

                          Hey Possum,
don't loose heart. Sometimes even though it not seem so, comments made to the air go somewhere and make people think a bit different. Anyway, Sam think you should eat and sleep. You look a little peaky in your avatar photo.

Smart man, Sam Lee is. Sometimes there are those who only lurk in those forums that I hear from later, and sometimes they become customers. WB isn't stupid, if he read all my rants, its going to stay in the back of his mind that just using stock parts to make pickups is like trying to build a Ferrari out of Volkswagen parts. Thats mostly what I was trying to get across to those guys. If that threatens the status quo so be it :-)

I love PAFs, but they aren't for everyone, and they don't do everything well. Knowing them and how they work has taught me a ton of useful stuff to be used in later projects, so all that work is invaluable to me.
