    So moving forward, add wire guides and don't use quite so much tension.
    Wire guides are more important with narrow bobbins.
    You may be able to get away without guides on wider fender type bobbins.
    IMO, I like them with all bobbins.

      To me it sounds like the high winding tension caused shorted turns.

        I added the wire guides, upped the tension a tiny bit and wound a much neater coil. The result, an awesome sounding pickup, I am dead chuffed. Does a spot on Angus Young tone. I actually prefer it to my Gibson Super 57!

        I measured all the values, inductance, capacitance and dcr, all are the same as earlier pickups I've wound with the same number of winds, but the difference in tone is night and day. I did wonder about the tension causing wire breaks, but seeing as the values are all the same I'm not sure. Unfortunately I haven't got anything to measure the resonant peak as that would have been interesting to know.
