  • SD Single Coils

I have a pair of Seymour Duncan Strat Single coils staggered P/Us in for repair.
They have black bottoms, black and white cloth wire, and have the following date stamp.
    SD 2 87
They have paper stickers on the bottom that have M1R, on one, and N1R on the other.
The short wire pickup(bridge) is a full coil with black tape over the wire.
The one with longer wires(neck) is pretty full with no tape.
They both read open, zero DCR.
Each pickup has a inside diam. of near 11mm inside the forbon.
Does anyone have a clue what the DCR Would have been on these pickups.
I haven't starting taking them apart yet, so I don't know what the tpl is.
They apear to have HFV 42 Wire.
The exposed pickup appears to be hand wound.
Did S. D. himself Wind these?
    Thanks,
    B_T

I can answer some of my own Questions.
The Code on the Bottom seems to be a universal Code on that model number.
The 2 87 may have been when this model was started or that particular Flatwork was started at Seymour Duncan.
There are quite a few different posts on different forums asking about the same questions, as mine.
If these are the SSL-1 Model the DCR would have been around 6.5K DCR with A5 Staggered Magnets.
    A full Coil of 42HFV.
These apparently were not wound by Seymour Himself.
These seem to be made on a machine, and the coils seemed to be around 200 tpl.
The winding area between the flatwork was 11mm.
I attempted to repair them, which was for Naught.
I have them all cleaned up and ready to wind tomorrow.
    Later,

M1R should read: M is for Middle p'up (check the polarity, it could be RWRP) - 1 is for SSL-1 - R is the first letter of the person that wound that p'up, so the other is a neck p'up.

        HTH,
That sounds logical. the 1R was stamped, and the M & N were Made with an ink pin like someones initials.
They both appeared to be just alike. South up and Wound Clockwise.
I have them both stripped ready to rewind, I took one apart and turned the magnets around so it will be north up.
I liked everything except for the extremely short B String magnet.
I have rewound several old Fender S.C.s and they always have a .650 B string Mag.
        These both have a .630 B string.
They are so short it looks funny.
All the other magnets are the right length.
I'm making a third pickup for the neck.
        Thanks for the response,
        Terry
