I want to add say 50 turns to a coil, can I just soder the wires together without adding any insulation or such and just wind away.. This is just for testing.

Never had a problem with it.
I have sprayed a little Krylon clear on it, after the splice and let it dry a little while.

If you do enough winding, splicing now and then goes with winding.

Tie a knot (A bigger knot makes it easier to see) ,joining your wire (this works better with some tension on the wire to make sure the wire don't stay stuck to the iron ) now just SCUFF the knot with some sand paper,solder & tape continue winding
I can do these same steps without sanding poly wire but it sometimes melts the wire"UP here in the Canada we shoot things we don't understand"
