There is room for vintage and Modern Pickups Being made and discussed here.
Most people wind, so they can make vintage pickups.
Let's let them make them in Peace.
We have enough areas that are controversial, and have heated debates, that is fine there.
Let's leave this one for the peaceful, beginners, and Hobbyists.
    Thank You,

I'm days away from my late 50's. Unlike most on this planet, I grasp the concept of my own mortality. If you were to experiment with completely untested sealing processes you would, at best, only find the ones that didn't work and that would probably only be the day before you died. As for the processes that did work. . . well, you'd never know because you'd be long since in the ground. So if you've got a process to pass along, best get it in a book quick for the yet unborn youngsters to read 100 years from now so the industry will have something to remember you by.

For me, it will be some form of lacquer, for whatever reason. And when this hobbyist's sealant techniques fails, I'll be the first to make note of it publicly. No. . . wait. . . no I won't, because I'll be dead.

So David, speaking of "old ways" vs experimenting with new techniques, how's that CNC winder thing coming along or you still building calluses like Leo did. I can send you the plans and code for my CNC winder if it would help move you into a more current day technique.

        I haven't been Dipping, but I think I'll start?
Jim, Copperhead, do you guys recommend Skoal, Copenhagen, or Kodiak?
Which one will help me Catch A bigger Artic Char than Jim's?
I modified the Pickup, now it's a Huntin, and Fishin Truck!
I mounted a stringer on one side and the Easy Ryder Rifle Rack on the Other!

Here, let me lower the bar for you a bit with a platter of Arctic Char my son and I caught one afternoon a few years back. They look a lot smaller after they've been cleaned.

Well there's your problem. Even a ~ 30 cal doesn't penetrate more than 20 feet into water. Arctic Char sit in ~ 100 feet in the summer where I come from and even 25 feet just after the ice goes out. You need a bigger gun!

                  How About a A-10 WartHog?
                  It's built around a 30 also?
                  But, that 30 is a 30mm.

Of course both things are wrong in some extent, because it also lets moisture back into the wood.

I'm supprised !!!! ,You being an Anti-Vintage guy , do you Believe Nitro "Breathes" ? & it not being a good moisture barrier ? some one should of told this to General Motors ,they were spraying it on bare metal ....
the main reason the automotive world ditched Nitro in the 50's is ,It is not particularly resistant to light or pollution and consequently more modern paints have been developed that last longer. It also takes a long time to dry. Environmental regulations make the purchase and legal use of nitrocellulose increasingly difficult in many countries, due to the amount of organic solvents that evaporate into the air during painting and drying, & of coarse some of the premier car builders figured this out & already started using Acrylic Lacquer .

                          howdy from Alberta, Canada
I just stumbled on the forum, and being a newbie at this winding pickup thing, I am looking for all the info I can, also living in an apartment, I sure don't want to be using nitro, Jack Danials maybe but not nitro . Anyhow I have read a lot about sealing the completed bobbin before winding, and it seems to me that it is very important to do this, but, yes there is always a but, there are some things that would seal better and harder than others, and that is what the end result should be I think. By the way, I am starting to build my first lap steel guitar, actually my first guitar and I thought, 'what the hell' why not build/wind the pickup also, so any help would be appreciated.

I'm chiming in late here ... but I thought that along with sealing the forbon and providing some magnet insulation the lacquer also helped "fix/glue/seal" the magnets in place in the forbon. I know some use a thin super glue to do this.

I'm using nitro and it's a right pain in the ass. It takes forever to dry and I need to roll the garage door up when I open the lid. I was initially going to use a polyurethane (wooden floor finish) as it seems pretty hard and waterproof.

                            Thoughts ?

Everyone does it different I think.
I super glue, spray lacquer, dry, tape magnets.
Then wind and pot, and hope for the best!
