Brad, I definitely want to see photos when you get a chance.
Elepro,
Sorry if I pulled a number out of my a$$ but I thought it might be useful for folks to have an idea what the total price could be. I can see now that the chip set won't include the pcb, display, headers, discrete components, switches etc so I was probably way off. I hope folks won't be scared off when we do come up with a total.
I did send the 2 drivers we spoke about on Friday via airmail, you should have them in less than 3 weeks I hope.
I guess I need to prepare a PCB next? I don't know if there's a parts-list or silkscreen image posted earlier in this thread. I'll go back and look...

i have replaced zip file becaue i changed pcb.pdf and controller board.jpg files
in these new file you can see 8 pads in center of board useful if you want mount external push buttons... (like in redhouse pcb)
this because it's impossible find push buttons so long.... then if you don't want extend them (with a glued plastic rod .... like mine) you can mount a female header and mount normal push buttons with wires.....

Here's a very preliminary parts list:
LCD 16x2 compatible with HD44780
R1 10Kohm Potentiometer
R2 22ohm
R3 100ohm
R4 10kohm
R5 330ohm
C1 100nF
C2 100nF
C3 100nF
4N35 optocoupler 4N35SR2M Fairchild Semiconductor Transistor Output Optocouplers
BYV27 Ultra Fast Recovery Rectifiers 2.0 Amp 150 Volt 50 Amp IFSM
IRFZ48 Single-Gate MOSFET Transistors N-Chan 60V 50 Amp
What Voltage rating for the capacitors?
What Wattage rating for the resistors?
Is the display the same one we used for the gauss meter?
Can we use the same header?
Sockets for the PICs -what pitch?

this could be a very simple solution for main motor/faceplate assembly:
two L brackets kept with 4 distancers and bolts and screwed in a wood board....
the bracket on left is for motor.... we can mount motor in the high position if we join directly to the faceplate shaft or we can mount in the low position if we use pulley and belt....
the bracket on right with the two big washers and 4 through bolts (not drawn) keep two ball bearings with the faceplate shaft.... (a bearing go between internal washer and internal bracket surface ....other bearing go between external washer and external washer surface....whole kept by bolts....)
please, say me if it is clear.....Last edited by -Elepro-; 10-07-2009, 01:37 AM........my gaussmeter project..... ........

R5 330ohm............271-330-RC
C1 100nF................505-MKS02.1/63/10
C1 100nF................505-MKS02.1/63/10
C1 100nF................505-MKS02.1/63/10
4N35 optocoupler............ 512-4N35SR2M
BYV27 not stocked.... equivalent 625-UF5400-E3
IRFZ48 ............... 844-IRFZ48RPBF
display ............... 763-0216K1Z-FSW-FBW
terminal block............. 651-1729186
IC Sockets:
2X DIP28.... 571-1-390261-9
1X DIP8......571-1-390261-2
1X DIP6...... 571-1-390261-1
*************************************************
if you want use external push button:
terminal block........... 651-1725711
push button X7 ............. 506-MSPS103C0
if you want use onboard push button:
tactile pcb push button X7 (need extension)......688-SKHHDT
the stem of these button is 14mmX3mm... then it's easy to extend them with a plastic rod and a piece of heat shrink tube (or glue)
***********************************************
if you mount display on pcb:
header............ 855-M20-9771646
socket............. 517-974-01-16
if you mount display with wire:
1ft flat cable.......... 523-135-2801-016FT
(this cable has .050 pitch then needs separation at ends to fit in .1 pitch....Mouser have not .1 pitch flat cable )
2X8 wire block 651-1725711 (for pcb side....)
you can solder flat cable on display.......my gaussmeter project..... ........

I like it more or less and true that it would be very reasonable to implement with a minimum of equipment.
We could simply publish a PDF docs with all the holes that can be printed and stuck onto the MDF, wood, plastic, aluminum etc the person prefers to use. They simply need to mark each hole center with and awl and drill each hole with a combination of drills and perhaps a Forstner bit.
The ball bearing races could be replaced with Delrin /acetal bushing similar to the center carriage with the internal threads to save time and expense.
The leadscrew can be turned down at each end for the kits so that the screw is captive between the bushings. The builder simply need to align the endpieces and keep the the right distance apart but again that could be simplified with accurate PDF printouts showing all the screws and inside edges in the correct position on the base plate.
If I were to use ball bearing I'd use the type that are already mounted on a plate (Flange bearing) for vertical mounting surface or in a pillow block for horizontal surface that will compensate for less than perfect alignment.
Like these...
