If the internal lithium battery isn't exhausted, this ought to work as a turns counter. It's similar to the CUB3, but with a few more options.
Speaking of expired batteries, I got a couple CUB4's once that had dead batteries, I opened them up with the intention of replacing the batteries but instead just ended up removing them and hooking up a LM317 setup for 3.3V output.

Try the intersil 7207 single chip counter. add a 4 1/2 digit display and instant
counter. It is still available from several sources for a few bucks, I got mine as a free sample. Very easy to use you can cascade two for very high counts. use a phototransisror led interrupter or reed switch to trigger.
