  • DIY machine and first wind

    Good afternoon folks,

I have recently finished my first two humbuckers which I wound with my own machine.
I used a pair of kits from Amplified Parts, with 42AWG poly coated. I was going for a brighter tone so used Alnico 5 and no more than 4,500 winds per coil for the bridge, and 4,000 for the neck. That gave me 7k and 6k DCR respectively. Compared to the Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz I had in one of my guitars these are so much brighter and more articulate. So I am very pleased.

I wrote up the project as a blog post:

    Cool project.

No clue on Arduino or anything Digital but sent link to a friend who does.

Thank you. It's very exciting for me as I've been writing code for my job for 30 years now. And I've been building guitars for longer than that. Arduino (and other similar platforms) bridge the gap between my 'analog' skills in woodwork etc and 'digital' coding.

Nice, Simon! µcontrollers are some awesome stuff!

Some practical questions. Where did you source the bearing and the flange? How does the coil former mount on to the plate? I didn't read all your code but did you use/ consider acceleration / and deceleration to avoid wire breakage?
Experience is something you get, just after you really needed it.

Those came from Amazon. Just search for "6mm motor flange" and they'll appear. There are no bearings involved here though. The lateral limiters are just 6mm drill bit depth stops.

The coil former mounts using double-sided sticky tape. Nothing fancy. I was worried that this would not allow for proper alignment and that I'd have issues with oscillation but it was all ok.

Yes, I did write code to ramp up the speed, but my motor is so cheap/terrible that it does not respond well to lower speeds, I need a more powerful motor.

counter on Arduino is not the best solution (often freezes). it is better to use a regular pulse counter

                    Thanks!!!
there was one more intermediate machine (a rewinder from a DC motor and a wire stacker for an arduino and a stepper motor). I developed it and ordered spare parts, but by the time they arrived, I had already figured out how to make a completely CNC. what is cool on cnc, you can make any kind of winding, for example, as on Throbak KZ-115 https://www.instagram.com/p/COVYce_AOvL/
