  • D-50 Power up issues

My brother passed me a D-50 a little while ago, it was in storage for some time.

I never powered it up, but he had mentioned a battery issue and key problems to me.

A little stupid, but didnt power up the unit before starting all this.
Opened the unit and replaced 3 keys and the CR battery. Did this with extreme care.

Once completed and re-assembled, powered it up and got the
    “*** Expanded Linear Synthesizer D-50 ***
Roland Corporation Musitronics” on the screen.
(I assume that is has the expansion card in the unit.) but nothing else.
Just a red light against the VALUE Key. See pic.

Then, powered it off, waited 1 min, and then on again, and now nothing, a blank screen, but still the red light next to VALUE. Tried INCREMENT and Zero startup and nothing.
If I leave the unit off for about about an hour, and power it up again, I get the same thing, the message on screen. Then power down and up, again, jsut a blank screen.

Would really appreciate some assistance from anyone that can help.
I am not an electronics person, but I will do my best.

I wonder if you should try performing a Factory Reset?

    Update - Fix Links

    Sweetwater D50 Factory Settings

Or try this link on the Roland Web site - D50 Factory Settings

Try with Data Transfer and Zero at startup.
If you then have a responsive machine, you will have to re-load the factory sounds.

Did you try Data Transfer and Zero at start up? You said you tried INCREMENT and zero, which is not correct for reset.

Follow the instructions per G1's direction.

For some background, you might consider reviewing this thread.

Do not factory reset a D50 without a method for restoring factory sounds- either by card or by MIDI. A factory reset erases memory. Removing the battery will do the same, as battery power is necessary to preserve presets. You will need to reload the keyboard with factory OS and presets either with a card or via MIDI. Factory presets, instructions, and program for MIDI reload are available online from several sources. Or, find someone with the factory preset memory card.

Right now he has no display so no menu or means to load anything. That is why I thought the reset might at least get that stuff going. Or does the factory OS have to be somehow loaded before the display and menu will even work?

Oh, I missed the part about no screen. I read:

"Once completed and re-assembled, powered it up and got the
                  “*** Expanded Linear Synthesizer D-50 ***
Roland Corporation Musitronics” on the screen."

I also see a picture that shows the boot screen, so figured it was booting. If you can get that far, you should be able to load from MIDI or card. If there are problems, you can try a factory reset first and then load data. At this point, you haven't got much to lose, as the factory info has already been lost.
In answer to your question g1: The unit should boot all the way to a menu screen (when selected after initial boot) even if memory has been wiped. It's sort of like BIOS on a PC. It just won't do anything or play sounds until you reload the rest.
