  • Peavey Ultra 120 Clist bargain...FS no work

Just picked up a PV Ultra 120 for $100 off Clist, he spelled it Peavy so many may have not found it, and I probably could have talked him down. He told me straight faced that it was "good for country" and his brother had left it in the (PDX) basement for a decade. I though he was kidding, but on firing it up at home I realized the origin of the "country" comment. The head sounded AOK on clean but like a sonic abortion on Crunch/Ultra, his "still has the tubes it came with" comment came back to me.

A couple NOS GE 12AX7a's installed and it kills; the 4 x 6L6 are apparently AOK too

BUT the footswitch from my Ultra 212 leaves it in "Clean" on all the time (LED ON) even though I can get Crunch/Ultra with the FS removed...odd as I thought w/out the FS you couldn't get Crunch....

Must be a bad relay? Its a mess outside but pristine internally made April 4th 1991.

Might but it into a Mahogany Radio Cab I got a while back, will post the finished project.

First, resolder the 7-pin DIN jack in the amp. Can't pull in a relay if the circuit is open.

Pins 5 and 7 control relays. Ground each to chassis to see if the relays click on. If they do, the the circuits are working. Are we sure the FS is 100%?

its a 100% on my Ultra 212, which is pretty similar,

Will check the pins when I get a chance, this new 2 x 1:40 commute is tiring me out!

      Thanks Enzo!

Could I begin a collection from helped posters here to buy you an "Enzo"?

Shoot, the insurance alone would be more than I make.

          Hi Enzo
I read on your post that you have the schematic for the peavey ultra plus 120 and for the footswotch. I have a proplem with low volume, i can play my guitar and I can hear it but it like the volume at 10 is very low like it would be if you set it on 1 or 2. i need a footswitch also ican build my own, i did build one for my triumph 60, if you can help me out that would be great, if you have any help on the low volume issue that would be cool too.
          Thanks
          Dave

Contact customer service at Peavey, they will send you any schematics. Ask them for the collected footswitch schematics too.

On the Peavey Ultra 120 I am trying to get the footswitch working, its the relay thats bad

replacements are hard to find as the original part number Peavey 71322277 WAS a P&B T83S11D212-12 while later PV parts are Omron.
The precise german made P&B part is available for $7 from the typically high priced Nebraska Surplus:Sealed PC Mount Relays

The Omron version with the 760ohm coil (~16.7mA @12vdc) is G6A-234P-ST-US-DC12, ~$4.50 from Allied or Mouser

BUT I believe the Panasonic high sensitivity model will work: DS2Y-S-DC12V and costs $2.81 at Mouser

              here is my DIY footswitch;

the Ultra 212 one had buttons so close it only worked on shoe sizes <9 and the reverb ON LED needed to be blue (4 LEDs = 4 colors in my book)

                Peavey Ultra 120 replacement caps

swapped out the Ultra 120 PS ELs, using same sized caps BUT in some cases much larger values (Cap technology has come a long way)

they run $50 from Mouser and clean and stiffen up the sound a great deal. (U want sag and hum, stick with stock values)

                Mouser #: 667-ECO-S1VP822CA
                Mfr. #: ECO-S1VP822CA

                $3.14
                Qty 2 $6.28
replaces C60 (4700uf/35v) C61(2200uf/35v) unsymmetrical for some reason?

                Mouser #: 667-EET-HC2V221BA

                Qty 2 $10.16
                replaces C301, C37 (1000uf/35v) axials (some have c301 snap-in see below)

                Mouser #: 667-EET-UQ2V681LA

                Qty 2 $15.78
                replaces C51,C52 (330uf/350v)

                $48.02 total price

(if C301 4700uf/35v snapin as in PV board layout you need ECO-S1VP472BA or ECO-S1VP472CA, it was a 1000uf/35 axial on my Triumph 120 board)

You can get the 2.2uf, 0.47uf and 22uf Nichicon axials too:

                Mfr. #: TVX1H2R2MAD
                Desc.: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors - Leaded 50volts 2.2uF 5x12 20%

                Mouser #: 647-TVX1HR47MAD
                Mfr. #: TVX1HR47MAD
                Desc.: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors - Leaded 50volts 0.47uF 5x12 20%

                Mouser #: 647-TVX1V220MAD
                Mfr. #: TVX1V220MAD
                Desc.: Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors - Leaded 35volts 22uF 5x12 20%

but upping the cathode bypass 0.47uF (mine had 2!) is a great idea IMHO!
Double check the measurements, worked on my Ultra 120 Head with Triumph 120 board!
