  • Modifying Allen & Heath ZED 14 for direct outputs?

    zed 14 schematics
Im thinking about doing a modification for Allen & Heath Zed 14 mixer. I would be tapping after the faders and put outputs female plugs behind the mixer.

This guy on the video DIYs pre-fader outputs. Id want post-fader. He puts D-sub connector. I was thinking about putting just 6.3mm female plugs to make it as simple as I can.
In the video the guy says he tried to make the outs post-fader but they gave some noise when sliding the fader. Any idea what would cause this? Dust perhaps?

I tried to contact the youtube guy but he had no public contact info

So any ideas or comments are very much welcome!

    Thanks in advance!

This may not be of any help, but you can use the insert as a direct out if you just insert the plug to the first click. No modification required. It will be pre fader, however.

Yea, thanks for answering, but I really need the direct outs to be post fader.

The fader noise you refer to suggests something was not right with the faders or there was unwanted DC on them. There are a number of problems that cause fader noise - dust/dirt, wear, improper cleaning and lack of lubrication on the track, physical damage due to impact. Taking an output post-fader should not be an issue if a fader is otherwise working normally and noise-free in the unmodified mixer.

Thanks for answering. Do you think this could be easily doable?

Without a schematic it's difficult to determine where the best place is to take the output from. Often a post fade output has some form of signal conditioning such as buffering, setting the output level and to determine the output impedance.
