  • Some of these modern throw away electronics can get quite expensive

A local restaurant brought me a barely used $800 JBL EON 618S subwoofer that is shutting itself down, making loud noises when it does. I told them it was a full module assy replacement repair since boards are not offered for this model, and I stand no chance of repairing an smd class D amp/supply. They were bummed because they only bought it just before the pandemic less than two years ago, and only used it maybe 6 times. I looked all over the internet and the only one I could find is in Australia for $345 plus shipping to US. The dealers all told me the assy. was discontinued with no replacement offered. Lots of not working/for parts only modules available on eBay, so I assume these had a high failure rate, and JBL abandoned them.

So now the customer has a $50 bench fee bill, and a $800 paper weight. And that folks, seems to be largely where we are today with today's throw away world. Sad.
It's weird, because it WAS working fine.....

FWIW, you can get a generic 1000W class D amplifier/power supply on ebay for about $80. I haven't used one of those but am considering one for an Ashdown amp I have that used an Icepower board that is no longer available.

While retrofitting a different power amp/supply into one of those JBL EON Subs, that doesn't solve the low pass filter, and probably Hi Pass Filter in the original design. More engineering and cobbling required. What a bloody shame that product turned into and all of the folks who bought them to find what a poor investment that turned into.

Yes, indeed...I replaced the amp in a JBL 515XT subwoofer with a 500w class D module. No fancy x-over, but it still thumps!

So what did you do for the $50 bench charge?

Here is a partial list of authorized Harmann/JBL repairers in Florida.

What did I do for the bench charge? I dropped everything to take it in and check it out same day. Researched the replacement assy.and found it unavailable. Researched and measured a generic replacement option he found, and found it not to be compatible. And offered to come to him to install whatever he may find to replace or repair the original. Many times I waive my bench fee if I don't think I can help someone, but considering the amount of time and inconvenience and information provided, even if it was unpleasant information, I do not feel unjustified charging for this one. I have two hours into this. I have offered him the info to run it by the authorized shops, and help with that if he goes that route.

              Fair enough, Randal.

I was curious how far you went.

VERY ANGRY that on one side
                and JBL abandoned them
but on the other side THEY KEEP SELLING THEM ..... WTF??????
                https://jblpro.com/products/eon618s
For all of 800+ USD, straight from the Factory, not just some old stock units at some small Mom&Pop store with slow sales.

HOW DO THEY THINK THEY WILL REPAIR UNITS UNDER WARRANTY????

Searched around for a couple "plug and play" plate amps, they all hover around U$350, same as the original one in Australia, so a deal breaker.

I guess you will have to follow xtianīs suggestion, but need to go the full monty, putting together the kit yourself.

You could use this dedicated subwoofer X-Over or a similar one,
                https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32614405466.html
itīs single supply because itīs meant for car subwoofers but works just as well with "Audio" stuff, needs easy to get +24V.
This one or other similar ones.

coupled to some 500W Class D poweramp + supply such as:
                https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/ampli...0w-p-8237.html
this one from France and just as a reference, total cost should be U$200-250 or less.
