Not a Peavey story but a solid state story:
A few years ago my band played a large venue with another band. We were first and sat our equipment in front of theirs. I had my amp on the pedal board and only a small cabinet behind me but on the floor in front of the
other band's Marshal silver jubilee, which was on a stand above my cab. From the audience it appeared as if I were playing the Marshal. A few musicians ( die hard tube guys) there approached me later and wanted to talk about my "great tone"
coming from the Marshal. They didn't want to believe when I told them I wasn't playing the Marshal....."Then what were you playing?" I told them a Quilter...." A what?...well, your cabinet must be really good".hahahahahaha...conversation abruptly ended.
Does it really sound like a Marshal ? I don't know, I've never played a marshal. Everybody's interpretation of sound is subjective. When ever I tell this story I always get the same thing " well, it wouldn't fool me". Ok...
maybe it wouldn't, I don't know, but you're right J M most musicians listen with their eyes
