I am having trouble finding a cheap enough 4ohm speaker for this thing in the UK, with it being a transistor amp, would I have any problems putting an 8 in other than a slight loss in volume?

No, go right ahead. The 3db loss is minimal and the amp will run cooler.

SOmetimes it is cheaper to buy or be given a broken small amp to take a speaker from than to buy a speaker alone.
