Bias supply and tonal affects?

Steve is alright. Better than alright actually. I've looked him up on line a couple of times to check on it myself. He's been hiking, mountain biking, practicing photography and possibly undertaking some heady electronics projects. It's clear that his decision to NOT be here is intentional. What's odd to me is that he was all in, then he was all out.?. I guess altruism only goes so far. He and a few others here are very obviously above getting much from the forum other than interaction. They already know what the rest of us come here to learn. And as far as interaction goes, I, for one, am very aware that I'm not always the best company"Take two placebos, works twice as well." Enzo

I miss Steve too (note the sig line). Glad to hear he's doing fine.

1. I emailed him 4-5 years ago...partly because we were both in The Bay Area...and also because we both (judging by his previous user name) shared the last name of Moore.
He Really Seemed to have a chip on his shoulder about all of you guys.
He was VERY proud of a certain amp of his (it may have been an 18 Watt preamp) that had been getting heavy use in a well known recording studio some where.
He seemed like a nice guy, but the emails went in and out of a linear train of thought.
Probably suffers from a genuine medical condition that Was Not of his choosing or fault.....but I could be wrong. I was no threat to him, so I was never the "victim" of any of his outbursts. Not at the expense of our finest members, but I do wish him peace.
2. Anyway.....I am saving this thread for a later read. It is very interesting and ties in with a question I have always had.....Of all of Fenders "Big Amps"...I think the Super Reverb is the only one that called for a lowly 25 mic cap in the bias supply.
THAT cap frequently gets changed out to a 100-100.....so I have always wondered what change, if any, that has made to so many amps and players over the years.?
Maybe none at all.......
Thank You

You're not confusing Gary and Guruman are you?
Gary was the guy who was convinced Merlin has "stolen" his idea for a diode as cathode bias. Guruman was the guy who hated all things Crate and made up a lot of technical nonsense.Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

well, about the only interesting thing i've done is stand around sometimes while Komet amps were being developed, i asked about the choice of bias cap value, (whatever it is) and was told that Ken Fisher (on the phone) speaking to Komet guys, was very adamant the "bias supply caps could be over sized, that they really affected the damping and overtones. and to resist upgrading fenders to 100@100". so that's what i do, keep the stock value, and sometimes i think i notice the difference in small fender combos when i cut them out and put 25@50's back on or 50@70. or whatever the stock value is. but then again i'm weird.

Other than the Fenders with 50v caps in a circuit the schematic labels as having 55v in it, I can look at this two ways. One is that as a half wave rectifier it can be more sensitive to filtration for hum reasons. I am willing to believe there could be some tonal nuance from it as well. But when my average customer walks in the door, I am going to default to less hum as more important to most than some tiny tonal thing. So I am in the 100uf camp.Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

Sorry about that Enzo.!
A total Bozo Move on my part.....My Apologies.
In my own defense ...... what are the odds of finding two guys (on a Forum this "small") that are so similar in THAT regard.?
But Yeah.....my mistake.
If you do not have anything nice to say.....
Again, My Apologies

Regarding the differences between SGM and mooreamps...
We've actually taken the time to wonder about SGM's fate. I don't remember anyone bothering about Gary. Take that FWIW but let it soak in"Take two placebos, works twice as well." Enzo

To me, SGM came in here swinging a club, breaking up the china. He sabotaged and did damage to the work we do to help people.
Gary came in with an attitude, and made arguments, but I don't recall him undermining troubleshooting lessons.Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

He obviously prefers plastic-ware.Start simple...then go deep!
